Big and strange mushroom ID w/ pics
    #5974136 - 08/17/06 10:03 PM (14 years, 8 months ago)

Hello guys, and girls, i was trying to identify this mushroom but i have no idea of what this is.

Spore print is jet black, stem is about 15". They was growing in decayed grass/woods. The cap is weird, looks like it has coats . It doesn't change to another color when touched.

Here are the pictures:

kurix is a friend.

Thank you.

It's an inky cap, genus Coprinus.

They are Coprinus comatus, aka Shaggy Mane. Too bad they wilted into ink before you got to them. They are edible, and as I hear, fairly good.

They look soft.

That looks like Comprinus comatus, but they are too far gone to eat. Next time grab some when they are less mature...

As above^^^,
Supposedly they are tasty.

I see them in the cow fields too.

I went to st thomas and camped out ontop of the island... Despite my entire family being poor all my life, the land is priceless.
I was chased by haitians in the main city charlotte amalie when my girlfriend and I got some cocaine for free in a bar and mixed it with alcohol, to form a stronger drug. With such confidence at 2am, we walked the 4-5 or so miles down to the beach where the african slaves lie like lions waiting on tourist prey.

The war isen't on drugs... the war is on the causes that influence people to abuse drugs. drug-abuse is a by-product of the system and much like radioactive waste occurs from utilizing nuclear power, drug addicts with drug-problems will need to be properly disposed of, like the decaying radioactive waste produced from nuclear energy. -i2ancid

I'm not sure they're comatus. It's hard to tell when an inky gets that, well, inky. Could be though but I wouldn't eat it.

There are only two species which I see as fitting IDs for the mushrooms pictured above:

Coprinus comatus
or
Coprinus sterquilinus

They are very similar macroscopically, however, C. sterquilinus is slightly smaller and grows from cow/horse manure, or straw substrate. C. comatus grows from wood debris (often buried).
Because he the mushrooms above are described as growing from grass/wood, and simply because C. comatus is much more common, I would discount C. sterquilinus as a probable ID.

Of the few photos of C. sterquilinus on the web, it also seems worth noting that C. comatus tends to be "shaggier", with more feathery wisps protruding from the cap, as well as scattered brown "scales" centered near the top of the cap, which specimens of C. sterquilinus do not appear to have.

Coprinus sterquilinus
