i was reading over the pf tek trying to do my homework before i actually start making jars, and something confused me. it says to place the lid so the side with the rubber seal is up and put tape over the holes.
why is the lid supposed to be upside down? or am i reading wrong?
thanks

no...your reading it wrong...put it with the washer down, flush against the rim of the jar..so it creates a seal

straight from the tek
Quote:
Step 3. Place the lid on the jar with the rubberized edge up (jagged edges of the needle holes down). Screw the lid band on. Place pieces of "professional" grade masking tape (holds on during steaming) over the needle holes. This is to protect the needle holes from contaminant entry.
but yeah, it makes more sense to put them the way theyre supposed to go. i thought there was something funny about that.
thanks

the thinking was with lid side down, the lids seal, and are hard to get off.
i've never found them very hard to remove. so unless you're a girlyman or have some kind of arthritis... id just put them normal side down.
it really doesnt matter either way
once you've punched your holes though, they leave little barbs going downward... so you want them facing down regardless so you have a smooth surface on top to work with. (of course that can be avoided by drilling instead... or filing them off... but meh, extra unneded work in both cases when a hammer & nail puts holes in jar lids right quick anyway)
