old hay bales...

I've been doing what dreamers do best, dreaming... I've come up with an idea, its probably useless but i've got mushrooms on the brain and need a new project to toy with while my rye jars incubate...
As some of you know i have horses, with horses comes hay. We just put out a hay bale that was probably only two months old into the feild because a newer delivery of it came today. Is there any way i can put this to use? Its mostly timothy and alfalfa. I am talking like could i put some spawn in it or colonized hpoo from one of my outdoor patches and make like a massive hay bale covered in mushrooms. I doubt it will work but thats because i've never heard of anything like it, however it seems similar to the idea of spawning to straw only outdoors with a whole bale. I figure nature deals with contams pretty easy... would it need to be leeched like hpoo and let sit thru rain and sun?
Could this work? or am i just dreaming. Has anybody tried anything similar...

If you want something to do with straw and poo and time you should start a compost. That's the absolute best substrate.

You can dump your old jars/projects into the hay and wet it down outside. Lots of folks do that. You just can't bring it inside and use it because hay has too many seeds(grain) which causes contamination indoors. RR

You can also soak down bales drain and shoot them up with plenty of LC then cover and keep as moist as possible and when the times right....... well happy trippin!!!

sweet! I'm gonna give this a try... I have a bit of LC to work with so I'll probably go with hyphae's idea although this is makin me think to make some spawn jars just for one sometime (it seems to me as long as its not contained to catch the LC at the bottom, rye berries as spawn would work better). what about some mycelium from one of my outdoor patches, would that make a decent spawn?
