Do a search in this forum for hericium, this will bring up a lot of good posts about growing Lion's Mane and other hericium.

The most common way to grow them is on sawdust supplemented with grain.

Doesn't the pet store stuff consist of cedar as well?

You may try to find a nearby saw mill with some good hardwood dust.

Petshops and lumbermills are the best places to start.

Large hardware stores sell pellet fuel. Pellet fuel is heated compressed sawdust, add water and it expands into sawdust.

Places that do millwork have sawdust. If you know someone who refinishes floors you may be able to get some sawdust, when they put a new oak floor in they sand it before they coat the floor with anything.

A lot of recipes for substrates call for wood chips mixed with the sawdust.
Some tree services sell the chips at a low price, sometimes they will give them away.

Some of the wood based pet bedding that is sold is cedar, it will labeled if it is.
