Black stuff in jars

Some of my jars have black stuff oozing out of the top inoculation holes. What is it? I'm guessing its not good. Using brown rice flour and verm. Should I throw out the worst ones, all, or none?

doesnt sound good... did you use a dry vermiculite layer on top of the brf/verm mix?

your friend was wrong. you need to add a dry vermiculite layer to keep out contaminates. id throw the jars away and start fresh doing it the right way.

once again, throw your cakes away and start fresh via the PF TEK link as shown above. dont try and save a contaminated cake if this is your first attemt, i can almost guarantee failure.
sorry man, i know thats not what you want to hear, but you also dont want to waste your time trying to save a contaminated cake, you'll have a much better success rate if you stick to the shroomery for your information instead of erowid.

i dont like BRF and verm. WBS is the way to go. cheap $1 bag from walmart, boil it in water and it swells up enough to fill 15, maybe even 20 jars. And if not, the bags are only $1.

How do u sterilize your jars using WBS? Do they have to be pressure cooked or can u just boil them for 30 min. or so? Also do u tape inoculation holes after inoculation or leave the jars open?

Fantasy,
Listen up I've got some of the best advice you'll hear on this board, EVER! Pretty well anybody with any experience here will agree... you ready?
READ!!!
Not erowid, not some other page you found on a google search and don't listen to your friend it's not their grow, you wnat your babies to be done right. Read here, read everything you can find, use the search feature to answer specific questions you may have, search the 'cultivation archives' subforum, these are all tried and true techniques. Also look at the myco directory for ideas as well as the other numerous ways of finding information on cultivation of mushrooms here at the shroomery. I don't mean to get you down but the odds of your success are slim and nil trying ideas like a brf layer instead of vermiculite layer. This is nothing but a sign of being underread and misinformed, that means theres hope to change and it's up to you to make that change for the better...
READ HERE, YOU WONT REGRET IT!!!! If you think you've read enough try again, I've read on here almost every single day since I joined and I promise theres always something new you can learn. This is a very fun hobby, but it takes patience. The patience to read and try to understand, the patience to wait for colonization of a jar, the patience not to get pissed or frustrated when a jar fails, etc. Growing mushrooms can be done from scratch, start to finish in under two months and the best part is pretty well any person WELL READ on this site can do it. Sure you could do a halfass job get a halfass batch of mushrooms (or none), or you could do it right and be another satisfied shroomerite. The balls in your court, i hope you follow my advice if youare serious about growing... And I wish you the best of luck.
