stalled LC questions
    #5972579 - 08/17/06 11:31 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I made 3 LCs (half pint) 10 days ago.each one was made using 100 ML of water and a tsp of karo, they were each inoculated with approx 1 cc of spore solution .I made the mistake of letting indirect light get to them for a few days and the temperature got into the high 60s at one point and up to the low 90s at another, for the last 4 days though I have them at a steady 74 and away form any light.well my problem is that they have pretty much stalled out completely.there is only a small amount myc growth in one of them and the other 2 have almost no growth at all.I also over cooked them in the PC and slightly caramelized the solution.I let them cool properly though and have no contamination in them that I can detect. My main prob is that I have no more spore solution left so my questions are --

1.did my overcooking and eventual caramelization of the solution deplete the amount of nutes available to the myc thus resulting in the stalled growth?and if so is it possible to reintroduce some more sterilized karo/water to the jars to try to get more nutes to them and get growth going.

2.did the exposure to light combined with the possible unavailability of food make the spores/myc stop expanding and try to pin/fruit,thus leading to the stalled growth

I know that PCing is not necessary when making LCs but I just wanted to be careful and considering my PC only goes to 11PSI I figured I would be safe PCing for the amount of time recommended for 15psi cookers.I also have thought about the possibility of the spores not being viable or being crappy but I ordered them from a shroomery sponsor and have never heard anything bad about them.Any suggestions on how I could salvage this into a viable LC would be greatly appreciated.I have also thought about just taking a larger jar adding some LC mixture to that jar and dumping my current jars into those but I didn't know if it would work considering that the least I would be making is another 100ml LC and adding my 100ML LC to it and that would be 1cc of spore solution to 200ML of LC.Is that too diluted, and has anyone had success with ratios like that.

thanks in advance for any input,
eclipse

What was your cook time? Slight caramelizing shouldn't keep them from growing at all, and 90 degree temps isn't devastating, unless the actual water temps were higher... which would only happen in direct sunlight.

You didn't mention shaking the LCs. It's a good idea to shake them up several times a day to keep oxygen levels high.

well i cooked aqt 11 psi for about 20 minutes but I had the jars in the pC while it was heatig up which was about another 10 mionutes and the are only 100 ML,they arent really dark they are a light amber color .and i have agitate them at least 3 times daily by swirling and shaking them with a marble/screws in the jar

And water quality can hinder them as well. Use distilled bottled water and you can still be OK.

Make a new LC jar and transfer the live myc from the one stalled jar to the new jar also, is your mixture cloudy or clear. I know you said it was amber but i was just wondering if it was a little clouded?
