i'm gonna swap out the optical drive i'm using currenty. the whole thing comes to $362.30. not bad considering the budget i'm on. it'll be used mostly for web browsing, office stuff, multimedia and a little gaming perhaps. it will probably dual boot windows xp and ubuntu.

what do you think of that?

Just keep in mind they arent goign to be making any more procs for socket 754 so there will be no chance to upgrade jus the proc if you wanted to later.

I think you're kind of limiting yourself on upgrading capability.

And i've never owned a Sempron but I think they're the lower end of AMD's line of processors.

If you expect to be playing any current gen games I'd definitely recommend at least getting a mobo that supports PCIe like the guy above me said. As i'm pretty sure they're making fewer and fewer AGP and PCI cards.

If I were you I'd at least try to get a bit more powerful cpu and a mobo that supports PCIe. It shouldnt cost too much more but I dont know what your budget is.

a sempron has less L2 cache than an athlon. this one has 256 KB while comparable athlons have 512 KB. i was planning on springing for an athlon while i was firguring this all out, but they cost almost twice as much. i can do without PCI express or a processor upgrade.

i'm buying this machine because the dell i bought 4 years ago has died and i need a computer. right now i'm using a $15 machine i bought at my school's scrap heap. i got what i paid for.

so this is an unplanned expense and the budget for it is very tight. i've cut costs wherever i could (except in buying a shuttle... i really want one). i'd have gone for at least a gig of ram if i could justify spending yet another 50 bucks. certainly i'd have gotten an athlon. this is a budget machine. i'm a student, and i really just need something to last me a couple years until i've graduated and have a salary and a little more to spend. i think this is a good buy for the price.

I wouldn't go 754, or agp for that matter, They have already EOL'D ( end of life) the socket 754 and agp is on it's way out. Shuttle has nice platforms to biuld on and it's worth the extra money to get the newer tech, I'd go AM2 with DDR2, will be cheaper in the long run and will run vista, I'm already running vista beta on my shuttle but it's terrible slow, i will be upgrading when money allows, or if you are running Linux it'll be that much better, DDR2 is alreay cheaper than DDR and thew AM@'s are pretty cheap considering. Been a tech for ten years and can tell you from experience that agp and 754 just wont handle vista in all it's "glory" if you want to call it that

i'm not interested in running vista. i would have definitely gone with the AM2 socket, DDR2, and PCI-Express support if i could afford it. i built this machine as a big step up from the low end dell i bought 3 years ago. it'll be more than enough to last me a couple years until i'm not a starving student and have a bit more to spend on something better.

speaking of windows though, i've been having some trouble with that. i can install windows xp just fine, but when i install ubuntu for a dual boot, the windows install gets trashed. i get a blue screen and a:

*** STOP: 0x0000007B (0xF7C2E640, 0x0C000000E, 0x0000000, 0x0000000)

when i try to boot windows. i've looked around but i can't seem to figure out what could be causing this.

thanks. i've done about a half dozen dual boot installs before, and i've never run into this, or any other, problem before with it. i'm thinking it's something to do with either the motherboard, hard drive*, or the interaction between the two. i'd do some experiments to figure out which, but this is the only SATA board, and the only SATA drive, i've got to work with.

the motherboard is a proprietary shuttle motherboard with the via k8m800ce chipset.

the hard drive is as posted above.

as a side note, i definitely undershot things with the RAM. there's barely anything left for cache once all the running applications have claimed their space. i'll have to put another 512 or 1024 MB stick in there soon. the cpu is doing fine and the onboard video is doing what i expected out of onboard video.

*edit: hard drive, not cpu

i ran into your bsod error at work last week. a guy was trying to install suse and windows on the same system, but once grub (and lilo which we tried later) had been installed, he got the bsod when he tried to boot to windows. the way i got him around this was to create a small 1st partition at the beginning to use as /boot. so, your /dev/sda1 will be 32MB (which i always use on gentoo installs). then create your primary linux partition which will be /dev/sda2, then your swap /dev/sda3, then your windows partition /dev/sda4. install windows first so it can load it's bootloader. then install linux, make sda1 your /boot, and install your bootloader. the problem is in the master boot partition. the customer and i tried fixmbr and fixboot c: from the recovery console, but what i stated above is the only thing that worked.

there are arguements both ways. i, personally, prefer winxp between the two.

one more question.

i'm going to have a:

/
/boot
/home
C:\
swap

i use a /home to make it easier to do a clean reinstall of my linux os without losing all of my stuff. i have to make an extended partition i see. which of these should i put on the extended partition?

it doesnt matter. for me, just for organization, i would make 2 ntfs on one logical partition in the last slot on the drive. then put everything else where ever. i keep 2 ntfs partitions because i keep one as spare.

Re: I'm going to order a computer tomorrow. what do you think? [Re: automan]
    #6031582 - 09/05/06 02:25 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

that does not seem to have worked. i've done two attempts.

the first time i made a 32 MB partition as sda1, 15 GB NTFS, and left the rest. i installed windows to the 15 gig partition and installed ubuntu on the remaining space, using the 32 MB as /boot. i got an error because 32 MB apparently wasn't large enough.

i did it again, pretty much the same, but with 512 MB for /boot. this time the installs went fine, but then i got the same BSOD when i try to boot windows after installing ubuntu.

i'm a little confused about what exactly the MBR is and what each OS's bootloader is. when i partition, does the space i'm partitioning include the MBR, or is that hidden in reserve at the beginning of the drive?

when i install windows to a partition, is its bootloader going in that same partition, or also in a seperate MBR, or both? when i make a /boot partition for ubuntu to use, is all of the boot stuff going there or also to a seperate MBR (overwriting what windows created there)?

what is the problem and why is a /boot partition supposed to fix it?

Dual Boot Woes [Re: automan]
    #6033073 - 09/05/06 08:34 PM (17 years, 4 months ago)

i have read around and my understanding is this:

bootloaders come in different stages. stage 1 goes on the MBR (which is not a part of the partitioned filesystem) and stage 2 goes on a partition. stage 1 loads stage 2, and stage 2 loads either a kernel, or in the case of chainloading, a different stage 2 bootloader.

GRUB has a stage 1 and stage 2. NTDLR is a stage 2 bootloader.

is that right? what does windows write to the MBR?

why am i having trouble calling NTDLR from GRUB? i haven't run into this problem before. also, why would making that /boot partition solve anything?

SATA drivers that came with the shuttle. the way the driver disk was labeled led me to think i only needed to install those drivers if i was using RAID. turns out i needed them though.
