PDA or malt extract

I know PDA is used for petri dishes and it turns to a solid once it cools. I am a little confused however on how to make a LC using malt extract. When I look at recipies, I can not tell which one is for petri dishes and which one is for LC's.

Petri dish recipies have agar agar added, while liquid cultures do not. I use 20 grams of malt, 1 gram of yeast, a tiny pinch of gypsum, and a small pinch of powdered sawdust for each liter of water in liquid cultures, then keep it under constant stir for five days, at which time it's ready to use. If you allow LC to go longer than five days post eberbach, the mycelium begins to grow into a solid organism which is not nearly as effective to inoculate with as a few million individual colonies.
I also don't use PDA for Petri dishes or anything else. In my experience, it doesn't begin to compare with MEA. RR

Thx RR, That helped a lot.
Is there any measurements besides weight I can go by? I do not have a digital scale and I think they are fairly expensive.

You need a scale to eat them safely anyways, you can get a decent one for $30 or less.

here is an easy way to know the difference...
PDA = Potato Dextrose Agar
MEA = Malt Extract Agar
if it has a "A" in it at the end...its for Agar work on petri dishes.
You want Malt Extract without the agar added to it.
Also learn to use the search function to find the LC recipes on the Shroomery.
