Homemade magnetic stirrer and the LC race

I've been keen to make a mag stirrer. I googled & found this very helpful webpage: http://www.users.on.net/~pfitzsimons/MagStirrer/Magnetic%20Stirrer.htm
Well I did it! (Cost me about $35au all up. Although I had a 12v power pack already, and found a computer fan for $5) Although I skipped a part that he suggests as it seems pointless and so I have some pics to show. You see, the whole angle alliminium thing, where you have to grind it out, etc. is pointless. I just added 5 bolts beneath the fan to bring it up to the top and it works just fine, and was a lot easier than his way. Check out the pics! (Compare his and mine to see what I'm talking about) Anyway also in this thread, I am going to take half a print (sent to me by a very cool shroomer from down under****) into the mag stirrer and the other half into a jar without, (otherwise all things being equal) and see just how much faster it is with the stirrer to cultivate. Trick is find two jars identical and one that works with this stirbar?! All I have now is one that works - Most jars aren't flat bottomed, so, anyway... watch this space!
Here's the parts and progression for building this thing:

Hi no I didn't see that post, it's just coincidence!
That's cool, another way to build one!
Anyway thanks guys, now I can't wait to get going on to my first grow! I'll post the progression of the culture race in this thread, and my first grow in another I suppose. I'm going to inoculate later today

Good luck. Take all the precautions you can if you are scraping spores off a print into a LC in open air.

I found a container that works with the stirrer and I bought two for the context experiment(I brought my stir plate into the dollar shop and asked the lady if I could test it out with different containers. She didn't speak English, but although she seemed scared at first she started enjoying herself after a while I reckon.) So, here's some pics and another movie

Here's a little vid which shows my (highly unorthodox) LC jars. As you can see they are both the same, except one is being agitated constantly. I set the stir as low as I could... How does the speed look? Any opinions?

i opened up an old hard drive from '92(maxtor brand) and the magnet looked alot different from the ones ive been seeing in these threads.
did you guys have to modify your magnets in any way or did you just use it as is right outta the box(hdd)?
mine looks like a double layer of metal separated by bushings with 4 magnets on the inside.

How come the stir bar is not rotating in the centre like the previous vids. I guess it doesn't matter.
The speed looks OK.

when I brought down the speed to as low as I could get it, it stopped spinning... Also texus, these magnets are parts bought from an electronics store in Australia called Jaycar, and recommended by that instructions link webpage I built it from. But I think radio shack may have some bar magnets (and other parts) just like this? not sure..
