The mighty, tiny drug dog.

http://toledoblade.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article?AID=/20060811/OPINION02/608110303/0/OPINION04

WHAT weighs six pounds, grins constantly, loves kids, and may just be the most efficient anti-drug warrior in Ohio? Why, it's Midge, a six-pound Chihuahua-rat terrier mix. She may look like she belongs in some society lady's summer handbag, but she has the nose of a German Shepherd when it comes to sniffing out drugs, and can boldly go where no bigger dog has gone before.

Midge has made her masters at the Geauga County Sheriff's Department over on the eastern side of the state very happy because adding the dog, whose name is short for midget, to the department's K-9 unit has also improved its community image.

Children enjoy meeting Midge when Sheriff Dan McClelland takes her to schools. The pup is even a bit of a ham; she was grand marshal in the Memorial Day parade for a local veterans' group, and people often send her toys and treats.

But Midge is no wuss. She earns her keep. The toughest person with illegal drugs does not intimidate her. And she is thorough. In one recent case, Midge found marijuana hidden inside a book shelf, behind a family picture, and tucked inside a knick-knack.

She can go places where big dogs can't; Geauga County just might have law enforcement's smallest drug-sniffing dog. The North American Police Work Dog Association hadn't heard of a K-9 as tiny as Midge.

Maybe the moral of the story is that other police agencies might think about adding little drug-sniffing dogs to their own forces.

Big dogs have been known to damage homes, inviting lawsuits. And little dogs like Midge may also distract a few suspects with their cuteness. Of course, a dog as small as Midge might not be as effective as a larger, more fearsome canine when it comes to dealing with a big, burly drug dealer.

But Geauga County seems to have found a place for both Midge and her big buddies. They are troopers all.

At least you can 'stomp em' I guess.

Maybe the moral of the story is that other police agencies should see this and be offended at forcing an innocent animal into taking away people's fun.

All drug dealers are big burly and evil, didn't you know that?

hell, anyone with illegal drugs is a big, burly evil guy. most of them are highway outlaws who ride motorcycles, carry sawed-off shotguns and are always hopped up on meth. they are members of satanic cults that rape young women and bury them in the desert. those are just the white ones. don't even get me started on the others. baaaad dudes, these drug-possessors.

on the other side we have our valiant law enforcement and their courageous dogs, who did i mention are cute and like children?
