Datura ID
    #5969419 - 08/16/06 01:12 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hey everyong.I found a huge patch of some sort of datura. Its growing all along the north wall f a local redneck gas station.Earlier this summer while driving by,I spotted them.I thought to myself that has to be datura. Then I just shrugged it off and said those large white flowers must be easter lilys.

Then about a month ago I stopped by and had a good look at them and sure enough they were datura.

These dont look like my inoxias at all.I am stumped.Another user has mentioned wrightii.

The smell of the flower is strong and lemon like.

Here are some pictures.Sorry about the quality, they were taken at night.

Here is a pretty nifty shot with the night exposure setting.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

I can't say with any kind of certainty what they are- I can say that it's not stramonium or metel. Could be Inoxia or possibly Wrightii, but I've never seen a wrightii in person. The flowers do look a bit different than most Inoxias I've seen....

One thing I noticed in the pix is that the leaves share a common trait as my inoxias; towards the petiole, the leaf blade is shorter on one side. That might not mean anything, though.

Here's a pic of what I'm talking about:

I think most daturas have that trait.Even my stramoniums have it.

The leaves just arn't screaming inoxia to me.

Yes I noticed that.I have sent sent seeds to people that were sent to me as stramonium but turned out to be inoxia.

There are tons of missidentified pictures on google to.

As of right now,I am gonna go with wrightii. The leaves look about right for that.Unless someone can give me some info otherwise.

Ebb,my inoxias grown from seed do not have a bitter smell at all.Are you talking about the foliage smelling intense?

Think that I found a legit resource for proper identification.

The American Brugmansia & Datura Society (ABADS)
http://www.abads.net/

And their handy ID Key pages: http://www.abads.net/Rich_Sanders/rich_genus_datura.htm

I used to have an inoxia plant growing outside my house that looked EXACTLY like that plant. Plant structure, flowers, and leaf shape. That would be my bet.

Well I have been looking over picture upon picture.I think it is inoxia.

I have been comparing it to my inoxia I grew from seed. This was my mistake.Mine doesnt have the purple tinge to the stems as the ones I found do.

I imagine they can vary a bit.
