Musicians....does practice make perfect ?
    #5969369 - 08/16/06 12:40 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

What do you reckon, as you get older you keep
getting better at your chosen instrument or you
get to a point your never going to improve anymore.
Your Peak …….

I think you get to a point and you know what you
can and cant do and things you’ll never be able to do
no matter how hard you practice, then you make
it your style.

What do you mean get better? Technically or musically? (Although the two are totally interlinked...)

I aim to keep improving till the day I die. I think that's quite achieveable, at least until I deteriorate physically.

Obviously the area of music you are involved in (broadly speaking, light or serious art) has a big impact on this question.

Sorry if that sounded a bit wanky; basically my answer is yes, I think you can keep improving till your body says no

Yes

every single time you play your chosen instrument, you become better. That's one great thing about instruments, you can't go backwards.

Also depends on how fast forward you want to go. Practising 8 hours a day, after one month you're going to be much more proficient than someone who plays 1 hour a day.

Now fast forward like 40 years. Maybe you will hit a point where your fingers cannot do things your brain is imagining. But then again, I think anything is possible. If you can imagine any random sound, be it on a guitar or just a piece of noise -- you can create it.

Perfection is music is something I personally do not think exists.

For one, music is a never ending search. A search for a certain sound, a search for a certain satisfaction.

In my opinion, the only time you stop improving is when your satisfied.

As for how good you can be, that starts with a gift.

You must have the gift of music to have the potential to be great.

Then it is a matter of refining your vision and seeking satisfaction until you reach it. If you are never satisfied, you are never perfect, and you will always be improving until you die.

I agree that there is no such thing as total perfection. One falows goals to get where you wanna go. As a musician one must always be seeking to fullfil a set goal. Its a game of catch up. Set a goal atain it. Set another and do the same. Always going for and seeking to "perfect" a goal.

I often tell people you can only play as well as you listen.

Those are some pretty wise comments. And there is no perfection in music, as music is a human art--and humans are definitely not perfect. I would actually rather hear a bad note once in a while than something that sounds like a machine made it. And we all have different ways to express ourselves. But you should never be satisfied with your music if you want to get better. And remember that the soul, the spirit, of music is as strong or stronger than all the theory, technical knowledge and scales in the world. But certainly know your way around on your instruments. Good luck.

nice poem

And my personal opinion, the more you practice the more available your technique is to allow you to musically describe the emotions you are trying to pass through your song. You might have the story in your head but can you show it to the rest of the world?

I love my guitar teacher, he can play in so many different guitar styles, each time making it so emotionally connected to the audience, and yet always trying to learn something new.

I dont agree that soul is the defining factor in good music. Technical ability isnt the end all either.
But lets say that you are a painter, will you be able to express yourself better through the art if you understand color fundamentals? would you limit yourself to only one color if you were trying to paint the sunset?

I was wrong and i admit it and hold my head in shame for
writing it.........musicians can get better even me and after
thinking about it i know things now i couldn't do before that
i can do now, if you follow.
I also know of rolls and fills that i hear that i'll never be able
to do even with practice but i realise now i still get better.
I was wrong................
