soil mix for pedro cactus with limited materials

I have a 6" cutting of San Pedro that's nicely calloused over and I'm wondering what the best soil mix would be with medium vermiculite, Jiffy Mix (w/perlite), and Miracle Grow perlite. The Miracle grow is 4-1-6 nitrogen, phosphate, and potash. I don't really want to have to go out and buy new supplies as I'm broke. Thanks for your help!

If you don't want new supplies, you can:
Sell your cutting. or Leave it around until you get supplies, it'll last.
Do not use vermiculite. You want at the very least some cactus soil, but that peat based stuff is usually crappy anyway. What you should have is fast draining, perlite will be good, or pumice would be even better. Limestone and compost are good ingrediants as well. You want cactus fertilizer. Do *not* use normal miracle grow stuff.
If you can't splurge on some soil, maybe give it to someone who can?

I like to use some store bought cactus soil, mixed with almost equal part perlite. I also throw in a small amount of limestone. It's that simple.
As Mr. Koolio suggested, do NOT use vermiculite.

That's a nice simple plan. What kind of limestone do you use? (like, size of pellets I suppose)
I have some medium size ones, and also a powder I bought, which is mixed in with the soil to buffer the ph. That's something you especially want to do if you have a peat based soil, like most cactus mixes you buy.

The limestone pieces are pretty tiny, slightly larger than BB's. To be honest, I'm not really stringent on maintaining soil pH, as I've never had a problem with it. I did just move though, so I may have to start being more careful in the future.
I have a serious fear of root mealies though.

i would root it via sand in a 1gallon and switch to a 5gallon of 2:1 pottingsoil:sand
playground = sand(usualy), 5gallon container = 99cents
therefore: Sand: $0 Pot: $1

Maybe, but I like having more control over the moisture of the soil... in fear of root rot.

I would go outside, find some dirt, some sand and some rocks.
in a bucket/pot, add rocks, then sand, then cactus, then a little dirt, then more rocks to decorate. water once or twice a week but keep it dry.
It's the most basic recipe for propogating cuttings without buying materials. I have two cacti so far that that have done fine.
For other people, rooting hormone is fantastic for cuttings. I wouldn't try without it.
PS - your local garden store is a great place to find "cuttings" of whatever you want.

As it hasn't been mentioned seramis is reportedly a good medium/constituent of a mix, I haven't used it myself though. If Seramis is a bit pricy some brands of cat litter ("Tesco Premium Lightweight Cat Litter" & probably others) reportedly work just as well and are a good bit cheaper.

Dang. Now you tell me. I used a gallon of verm in my 20 gallon bucket that i put a well rooted 2' Pedro in two months ago, since then it has grown over four inches and given its first pup.
I also used two bags of potting soil and three bags of perlite, should i be worried?

In retrospect I think verm is a bad idea because it holds moisture, something cacti don't like. If yours is growing you must be doing something right!
Any recommendations for good potting/cactus soil?

"bucket that i put a well rooted 2' Pedro in two months ago, since then it has grown over four inches and given its first pup."
Key word: Well rooted. The perlite will probably help out, but verm is something you absolutely don't want in there. Think of what it's used for with mushrooms: Retaining water extremely well. You want well draining soil for cacti (the exact opposite. I don't like worrying about how much water is being stored in the soil with cacti, too risky for root rot. If it's outdoors in the summer, it probably dries out well enough, but verm should really be avoided.
A verm based soil for a non rooted cutting would probably spell disaster.

well another thing verm does is give the soil some fluffyness, and that helps it dry out too. if u add enuff perlite, wich seems to be the case the overall result can be good.
however with the drying out between waterings im not too sure the verm is going to retain its moisture absorbing properties for very long.

The only reason i used it was because i had bought 'specialty cacti soil' from http://www.plant-planet.net/ a couple years back and it was mostly verm and bat guano.
Dirtyman: As far as i can tell, an organic potting soil - $5, and a bag of perlite - $3, with maybe some organic compost - $4, should be a pretty good mix, just watch the acidity of the compost, most manure also contains urine. I've been using Shultz tomatoe ferts with good results.

A 4 quart bag of Cactus soil at home depot or Loew's is about $4.00. That's more than enough for your cutting.
You said you had perlite so I'd mix that in with it....

Not optimum by any means, but beats the list of stuff he had. Mix in some sand, pumice, lime, or whatever would be an improvement.
Either way, pick up a little bottle of cactus fertilizer. They were 3 bucks or so last I checked.
