mycelium depth - casing
    #5966287 - 08/15/06 02:26 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

ok for my casing (50/50+) im going to use 1/2" bottom layer and a 1/2" top layer how thick should the actual "cake" layer be?

and is it good to use the 50/50 mix on the bottom better than just plain verm?

thanks~!

you can skip the bottom layer all together, it really doesn't do much for you.  seems like it might act as an extra moisture resivoir, but can actually do the opposite and draw moisture out of your substrate.  its also an anerobic environment where contams would just love to grow.  'tis but my opinion though, i know folks use them without problem, i have, found it to not help (nor hurt for that matter), but was just wasted materials and time

so anyway... that said... the "cake" layer is your substrate... since you were grappling for the correct term.  the substrate should be at least 1.5" at a barest of minimums.  2-3 works out well.  4" works real well.  the thicker the substrate, the more resources available per surface area on top of the substrate, resulting in larger mushrooms.  thin substrate = small mushrooms.  thick substrate = big mushrooms.  its really that easy.  id say use as much as you can.  (but i wouldn't bother going much over 4", you'll stop seeing benefits and can run into colonization problems.)
