This was found by my boyfriend's father and I just cannot ID.
I used several keys, but got nothing.

They are a little dehydrated in this pic. I couldn't get a good pic of the stalk, but it's very porous.... almost like a sponge.

They were growing in a circular pattern, under a pine tree in a mid-western US state.

The brown stuff was gooy/slimy and it seemed to attract flies.

Thanks for any help you can give me.

Also, no idea about the spores, there were no gills, just slime.

The "egg" or "bulb" of these mushrooms are the only specimens which are considered for the table... But even the young ones look repulsive to eat. They just get a lot nastier with age. :wink:

Not that I know of, no.

I have only one friend that was brave enough to try one. He ate a piece of the egg. He said it didn't really have a taste to it, but said that the texture of it felt like he had puked in his own mouth.....which he actually did do after spitting it out.

lol, he looked like he was going to get sick just telling me the story.

I know the Chinese have used it in cooking, but not sure on what kind of stinkhorn off hand.

I think the general consensus on stinkhorns is....find them, smell them, take pics, run away. :smile:

Although, you'll probably smell them before finding them.

That's odd. There was no distinct odor when I was photographing them. I definately would not eat them raw but I might try them in a recipe..... if I ever have the chance.

I was googling recipes and found this neat picture of another type of stinkhorn. You guys probably know all about it already, but here it is anyway
