Rains nourish fungi
Permits required for picking

August 14, 2006
Herald Staff Report

With daily rains maintaining wet conditions in the San Juan National Forest, wild mushrooms are prolific this summer, and forest officials are reminding commercial harvesters they must purchase permits.

Harvesters who collect mushrooms for commercial purposes must first purchase a permit from the San Juan National Forest, according to Ann Bond, a spokeswoman for the San Juan Public Lands Center.

A one-week permit for collecting and selling mushrooms cost $20. A 30-day permit costs $75.

Harvesters who collect more than 1 or 2 pounds of mushrooms for personal use should carry a free-use permit with them. These permits are available at the San Juan National Forest offices in Durango, Bayfield, Dolores and Pagosa Springs.

According to a Public Lands Center news release, harvesters should take the following steps to ensure continuing healthy mushroom growth on public lands:

• Do not take more than you need or will use.

• Cover the hole left when the mushroom was harvested with needles or duff.

• Use a mesh bag or basket when collecting to allow mushrooms to spore.

Some wild mushrooms are edible, but others are very poisonous. Mushroom harvesters should be knowledgeable about varieties of mushrooms and not experiment with unknown mushrooms. Guidebooks to mushrooms are available in local bookstores and Forest Service offices.

A free brochure with more information on harvesting mushrooms and other forest products is available online at www.fs.fed.us/r2/sanjuan/passes/ .
