Outdoors in NE

Is it too late to plant outdoors in NE USA?
Can you spray a pre made compost bed instead of adding cakes this late in the season and still get fruit before winter?
Thanks for answering...

Now would be a good time depending on where you are as the temps are good for fruiting.

I'm not sure what you mean by spraying a bed. You definetly want to have colonized cakes/casing that you can break up into Poo/straw, cover, and water.

At least thats my very limited advise/opinions.

hey tripbillies,

i also live in NE, and today just put 3 half pint cakes outside that had stalled, and were not worth the effort. i guess we'll see how things go, but personally i think they would do better with a little more rain. a little watering can take care of that though. earlier in the season may have been the best time, but who knows what will happen, and you can only hope for the best.

I think he means innoculating the ground with spores. You'll provably do better using colonised cakes.

If you put cakes outside late in the season, are you better off doing a thinner casing than moes tek since it has less time to colonize? Thanks.

To put it politely, you're straight fucked.

Being familiar with the area, just because it's still hitting 80 in eastern NE doesn't mean you have a chance. You -might- be able to pull it off, but my advice: Keep it inside, and dig those holes come April.

I would reduce the recovery time of breaking up the cakes by either not breaking them up or by minimizing the breaking up of the cakes. I have fruited cubes outdoors as late as mid October. I believe it was about this time that I spawned the bed. For things to work out you will need no to very light rainfall and temps dropping no lower than about 55 at night with regular daytime highs from 70-80f.
