Vermiculite substitute for making cakes? I need advice

Hi.
I'm going to prepare 12 jars but I don't have the possibility to get vermiculite. I'm thinking about using perlite between two aluminum foils in order to prevent contaminations while inoculating... is it a good idea? I know that perlite is not a good growing material but I suppose that it's better than nothing.
Thanks in advance.

Get a couple of natural sea sponges, 6 jars worth, cut them up into ~1/2 cm x 1/2 bits, doesn't have to be exact, use that as vermiculite, do the normal thing ya do, and inoculate with an LC (they're really easy and you already have the supplies for them. inoculating with a spore syringe, for whatever reason, leaves you with mostly uncolonized jars with sponge.)

You obviously have a computer and net access, so the possibility is there. Check eBay!

Thanks for the info. I can find vermiculite here but I need it tomorrow.
I hope to get some from a friend anyway.

Hydroponic supply shops carry vermiculite, as do insulation and swimming pool supply houses. RR

Do you think that many little aluminum foil balls may do the trick?

Nooohooohoooho. That will more likely give you alzheimers. Just grab something from around your house that has the same properties as vermiculite. Non color died cloth simmered for a few hours and then dried out will work, as long as its nice and fluffy.
There are many more substitutes, I'm currently trying a few and I'll tell you how they go. So far, most are colonizing, I just have to see how fast and how well they fruit.

A while back I found a very interesting document about using water crystals on this site. I can't remember if it was a tek or just info but it was quite thorough. I can't find it again. Does anyone know what I'm talking about or where this information is?

It's coming back to me now. It (water crystals) was used as a top casing because there was info about being able to see through it. Where is this info and can water crystals be used in place of verm in a pf style cake? I find verm to be problematic; difficult to obtain, expensive were I live and probably bad to breath even if without asbestos. I also wonder if it might contain heavy metals or other bad things that can be absorbed into the fruits. I'm sure mycologist would still be growing mushrooms if there were no such thing as vermiculite.

Finally I got some vermiculite, some time ago I gave to my father a bag of it and now I have found it (karma).
Now I hope to be lucky with the jars.
Thanks for the support.
