Myself, my wife, and a friend and his new wife (on their honeymoon!) will be leaving for this place in just a few hours. Taking a nap first before we head to the summit to watch the sun rise. After which we'll begin the 11 mile trek to the far side of this volcanic crater to spend two nights camping and stargazing. We'll descend to sea-level down the trail on the right side of this photo.
By the way, I took this pic myself last time we were up there. (Large!)

Bump -- for pictures!
Here are the pics I took from our 3-day trek into the crater of Haleakala. BTW- you can pronounce it correctly if you say it like this: Ha Lay Ah Kah La. The English translation is "House of the Sun" as the ancient Hawaiians believed their sun-god --La -- resided inside the crater of this volcano.
 Sunrise on the mountain.
The western side of the crater. The trail on the right side is the trail we'll be taking down the crater floor.
Yours truly on the floor of the crater, looking back at the trail we descended. The top of that ridge behind me is 9700 feet.
My wife (agr8fulchick) and myself nearing the end of our hike. There is a large break in the crater rim behind us, called The Kaupo Gap, through which we will descend two days later.

Photos of the Paliku area on the far side of the crater. At this point we are 10 miles from the nearest road. The photos are views to the north, east and west, respectively. BTW- this little camping spot is my new favorite place on the island. There only two other people camping in that area the nights we were there.
My wife and I enjoying the view of the Kaupo Gap.
A long-exposure of the southern sky though the Kaupo Gap.
On our way to the coast on the sourthern side of the island. This trail drops over 6000 feet in elevation in a little less than 8 miles. Possibly the gnarliest footing and most insane decline I have ever trekked. My wife was in tears by the last few miles and swears she will never hike it again. I tend to agree, ans future hikes into and out of the crater will not include this route.
Hope you enjoy my photos! May you get the chance to explore this Hawaiian marvel at some point in your lives.
