ok heres the deal...
i found these caps in my aunts abandoned mulch garden, and i just recently looked at a whole lot of pics of the wavy cap which it closely resembles...but i wanted to make sure i wasnt gonna die before i went diving into these bad boys...
habitat-central illinois, mulch garden, and grew in a group of seven or so
gills-grey to dark brown
stem- stems are white and grey in some spots about as big around as a pencil on the smaller specimens {1 1/2 inch caps} and not a whole lot bigger in the larger specimens {1 1/2 to three inch caps}
caps-1 1/2 to three inch caps...light brown color, concave in the middle and wavy around the edges, some specimens wavier than others..smooth texture and a couple of the other specimens are darker brown starting to turn black {i think i found em just in time i think they were about to dry out}
spore print color-spore print color was a rusty to dark brown color with almost a hint of purple
bruises-the mushroom did not wield any visible bruises
scent-it has a very strong repulsive scent
will post pictures if needed

From the sounds of it, not only is it not active, but potentially poisonous.
Anything with a rusty spore print should be avoided, as some with the same color print are known to be deadly or poisonous.
As far as I know cyans (wavy caps) don't grow in Illinois.

Doesn't sound like anything active- you say a rusty/brown print, which shows it isnt active, and could be quite poisonous.
SO don't eat it, you really need a pic if you want a proper ID, but it isnt anything magical which is what your after I'm assuming...

but i just wanted to know if liberty caps have ever been reported growing in illinois or maybe even a relative to the liberty cap, because we have a nature park down here called mcnaughton park and it contains alot of cow and horse pastures and i have found a couple of specimens that closely resembled the mushroom.
i have read up alot on shroomery.com and im jsut trying to learn, not trying to be a nuissance
