No signs of colonization yet

On my second try at PF cakes, I did everything the same as my last attempt which dry out and stopped growing. However this time around, there has been no sign of mycelium after about 6 days. The last jar showed growth after only 2-3 days which concerns me that the only difference in my new jar is that I added the vermiculite top layer (something I forgot last time and might have dried out the cake).
Does anyone have any idea what might be wrong? The strain is B+ and I am not familiar if there are different germination times from spores in the same syringe. Also, the cake has shrunk somewhat so I'd like to know if that is normal. There are no signs of contamination and the cake has that distinct sweet BRF smell. Thanks in advance.

B+ blows with colonization times. It's not a strain I would recommend, especially to noobs like myself. All of my other strains took at most 4 days to show mycelium in the jars, B+ sometimes took up to a week. Not only that, it stops growing sometimes and will just sit there and shrink in the jar. A little shrinking is normal, if it actually starts colonizing.
Personally, I recommend PESA, Tasmanian and Equador though there are many many other strains.

how long ago did you innoc your cakes??? why would you use the same recipe for cakes if they dried out last time...wouldnt that tell you to add more water? oh and the verm layer on top acts as a filter for air contam, lack of that top layer wouldnt make your cakes dry

brf doesn't have a distinct sweet smell.... bacteria does.
sounds like your first jars stalled because of a bacterial contam, and these ones could have a contam already - mycelium will not grow one a jar is hit with bacteria. you shouldn't really smell anything from a pf jar, maybe a faint scent inside a sealed incubator if you have many jars, but its certainly not a "sweet" smell... sweet = bacteria.
spore germination rates depends somewhat on the freshness of spores. with prints i've taken myself and moved to syringe to inoculation in a matter of days, i regularly see germination in 48h or less. if they came from the same syringe, the other variable that would make them germinate at different rates could be the moisture content in jars.
and to the other poster, there's nothing wrong with B+ colonization times, i regularly colonize half pint pf jars with B+ in 9-10 days and quarts of wbs in 7-9.
see the tips in the tweaking pf jar link in my signature and consider giving it another go.
