Rust on the lids of my jars.. problem?
    #5960068 - 08/13/06 06:09 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Making my 5th batch of jars today, I've noticed that the jars/lids are starting to rust where I punched holes in them with nails. I wiped them off as best I could, and I am using a dry verm layer on top so I went ahead and am sterilizing them now. I still have time before I waste any spores on them though - will this be ok? Is there anyway to avoid that rust? I did run them through the dishwasher, I'm guessing that wasn't a good idea.

Rust does not hurt anything. You will get long use before replacing.

Cool cool, I figured the dry layer would protect it from anything. Thanks for the replies

The PC will kill all the contams

a little rust with no contams in it is no prob

my lids are dusty rusty, and my inoculation success rate is like 99%

new lids are pretty cheap, if your a perfectionist!

You can always buy plastic lids. With plastic lids you get nice clean holes drilled or melted with poker. Thats what I did no more rust worries for me. Plastic lasts FOREVER bitch LOL.

No, they don't last forever. Plastic lids also have a bad habit of flying off when you shake. They strip out easily when tightening, and they make an imperfect seal. I threw all my plastic lids away after the third time spewing rye grain all over the floor. Rust is fine with me. It doesn't hurt a thing.
