Pressure cooker help!

Hey, I just nabbed an 8-qt. Mirro pressure cooker at Wal-Mart for $40. I had a quick question, and I didn't want to fuck up because this thing looks dangerous! How much water do you need to add for every 1/2 pint jar? And, do you just set the jars directly on the bottom surface of the cooker? Just making sure so everything will be safe. Thanks guys!

thats the one i use. Get you some chicken wire or a washcloth to put on the bottm so the jars aren't sitting right on the bottom because they will overheat. The put all your jars in there and put water in it until it is about 1/4-1/3 the way up the side of the jar. You dont need ALOT but you do need enough to not run dry..

That PC should come with an aluminum disc with holes in it which is for raising your jars off the bottom. If it's not in there, I'd go back to the store and have them give you one.

it does not come with one and the store aint gonna give you anything. That'd be like buying a car and then taking it back to the dealership and demanding they give you a free set of 20" rims and a stereo..

Usually, a trip through a couple thrift stores will get you several wire racks that can be used as/is, or modified to use as a trivet in a PC for $1 each.

Thrift stores are great for stuff like that.
Unfortunatly, I contacted Mirro after seeing only there new model of the 8qt at walmart, and it seems that they discontinued the old model.
The old model was 39.95 also, but it came with the metal rack for the bottom, and it was also 15 PSI.
The new model, while being the same price, is only 10 psi, and without the rack, while it does have a new, nicer spring loaded pressure release mech., and a new pressure indicator on the handle, and also a much better silicone gasket. Mirro's response as to why they made their new model 10 psi is that they found that most foods only needed 10 psi. The spokesperson sounded unsure about that fact though. I also asked if one could purchase a pressure wieght for the old model (15PSI) and use it on this new model, and the spokesperson didn't have a clue, and said she would get back to me.

I'm pretty sure the first PC I ever got was the 8qt Mirro, and it DID come with a tray exactly as Cubenisseur describes.
