Parasites.
    #5958413 - 08/13/06 04:25 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Here are some parasitic fungi for your viewing pleasure
These first three are of a parasitic fungus called Beauvieria bassiana. It attacks insects and feeds on their internal organs, the first two are a praying mantis and the third one is a wasp!

The first one here is Claviceps purpurea sclerotia.
The last two pics I suspect to be a Claviceps species, anyone got any idea what it is? it grows on paspalum grass.
Check that brain like pattern!

inski.

Nice pics again
That sugar icing fungus is quite cool, sometimes the insect dies when in half stride and it looks as though it is frozen in time.
As for the pics on paspalum grass I have no idea-

I suspected it to be Claviceps paspalli, although the pictures I have seen show the sclerotia as being a light brown-cream colour without the brain like pattern, are these pics of a more mature form of the same species?
I find these Claviceps species every year in abundance in the back garden, the Claviceps purpurea infects a variety of different grasses.
Next season I plan to do micrographs of the spores and other features!
Very interested in viewing pics of different parasitic fungi if anyone is keen to share!
Any feedback welcome.
