question about innoculating with filter discs...
    #595613 - 04/01/02 02:19 PM (22 years, 1 day ago)

First, I can use the filter disc in place of the lid, right..?
Secondly, I just innoculate through the filter disc, as in sticking the needle through it, pumping the solution in to the jar, then pull back out, correct...?
Perhaps dumb questions, but what the fuck do I care, I want to do it right.

you got it bro,my friendi just use the disk as the lid and innoculate through it. majke sure you flame the tip of ur neddle after every jar. my friend just tape the lid on . make it a very tihgt fit. my friend only had one that was contaminated, or thought it looked like it was and tossed it for precautions.

Better to also use a canning ring to secure the filter. Also after sticking the needle through the filter put on a small piece of tape to seal the hole. You can't be to careful. It would be a shame to ruin your jars trying to take such a shortcut.

Luvdemshrooms : I have and plan on using the canning rings. Negelected to mention that in my post.
What do you mean by taking a shortcut..?
What would be the "non-shortcut" way to innoculate with filter discs..?

The previous post suggested taping on the filters and didn't mention taping over the inoculation hole. Those are the shortcuts I was refering to. It may work fine that way but I think it's better to use the rings and to tape over the holes.

This is how I use filter disc's....straight from MM's site.
I pressure cook with one filter disc and the whole ring and lid or a plastic lid with a hole in the middle....tape the hole.
After my jars cool down....lift the lid off....carefully..... I make sure not to move the disc around.
I hold the filter disc with one hand to make sure it doesn't move around.
I inject the spores through the filter disc.
Then I take another filter disc and cover the first one....so that I have 2 filter disc's on.
Then I put the lid back on....tape on a label.....to id them.
Off to the incubation chamber they go.

luvdemshrooms : Ah. Ok. Thank you.
shaggymane : No such thing as a dumb question... what do you do with the shrooms after you grow 'em..?
roadkill : Using 2 filter discs, will that slow incubation at all..?
