Help me with my shitty connection

My connection will load a few pages then seemingly just quit working untill I release and renew my network, ip, etc addresses. Then it will do the same thing again. Its been happening for a few days now, and its pretty fucking horrible. I'm using Charter Digital with a linksys router - any suggestions on what the fuck is causing this shittyness or how to fix it?

Are you on a wireless connection or are there other machines on your network? It almost sounds like somebody else is snagging your IP out from under you. Do you get any IP conflict or this IP is already in use type of error messages?
The above is a long shot, but the first thing that came to mind. Other than that, you need to isolate the problem. You description makes it sound as if the problem is on your end and not the ISP.
After you renew your DHCP lease, drop to a command window and run ipconfig to get the IP address of your router. Then ping the router. You should get no lost traffic. Surf a few pages until the system breaks again. Now, ping the router rather than renew your IP. If you can still ping, move on to the next test.
If you cannot ping, renew your address. Look at the numbers you get ("ipconfig /all" to get the DNS numbers). Now hard code those numbers as a manual configuration rather than using DHCP. Surf for a while and see if your system craps out again. If it does, then the problem is with your router, most likely. If it does not, then your problem is with the OS, most likely. (Hook up another computer instead of this one to the network to verify.)
If you get a good ping, but no browser traffic, we can do a bit more testing. From command line, run nslookup, and then type in something like "www.google.com" without quotes. If nslookup resolves the name to an IP address, then it is almost certainly a malware/spyware problem. If nslookup times out, then it is probably a router problem.
One last thought... 99% of all network problems are wire related. I'm not saying to go out and buy a new ethernet cable, but rather make sure that the cable hasn't been chewed up by critters and that the ends are firmly plugged in to the ethernet ports. Your problem does not sound wire related, but I have seen some crazy symptoms occur from faulty wires.

Thanks a lot man, I'm alright with computers, but when it comes to networking, I don't have a clue.
nslookup worked perfectly, as well as my router ping. Both of those check out. I actually got a brand new cable yesterday when the problem arose because thats what I thought the problem was.
*sigh*

Alright I think I got it. The deal was that I reformatted and I didn't update to service pack 2 or even update the security for my comp that day because I was busy, and when I got back, I had MSBlast, Sasser, an amazing amounts of dialers, and adware on here. For the past 2 days I've used Ad-Aware, Spybot Search and Destory, CWS Shredder, Microsoft Defender, AVG Anti-Virus, and I had everything I thought, but there was one last thing that I didn't catch until I grabbed HiJackThis. I'm proud to say that I think I've disinfected this old compy of mine, and the real good news is that the connection hasn't seemed to timeout since.
I'm probably being too optimistic about it, but I hope for the best.
Thanks again.

Welcome. Glad it was an "easy" (read: inexpensive) fix.
