millet birdseed casings
    #594063 - 03/30/02 09:34 PM (22 years, 22 days ago)

Hi, a question about casing Eq's grown on millet birdseed....

The jars were fully colonized (I thought) after 13 days. I used 200 ml birdseed and 140ml water, autoclaved for 80 min. Nice rhizomorphic mycelium, looked very good.

When the colonized millet was crumbled, it broke into very small pieces (a lot of single grains). Is this usual for mycelium on grain, or were they not fully colonized? It looked as though each grain of millet had mycelium growth.

First try with grain, anyone with more experience, thanks for any help.....

If these were used too early, there is another set from the same inoculation that will stay in the incubator for a while more, so those could be used...

Oh, and coco-coir. Greatest stuff ever. No contamination issues, no pH issues, just perfect, and the mycelium loves it. My $0.02.

Millet usually crumbles like that when I use it. I get a few bigger clumps, but I also get a lot of single grains. Enjoy your adventures into grain substrates.

Hey, that sounds exactly like what I got!

You've set my mind at ease, many thanks sir grimes.....

Do you shake your millet after a week or so, or just let it sit? I shook some and didn't shake others (too much grain in the jars, a problem I'll fix next time).....

Thanks again

Yes, like that, except perhaps more loose grain and fewer clumps...

Thanks :-)

Three days after casing the millet, mycelium was poking through the top layer. I heard that pic was also the Ecuador strain.

I usually shake my jars after taking them out of the pressure cooker, and then never shake them again.

Hey Henry-

Are you living in the US, and if so, where do you purchase your coco-coir? Thanks in advance.

These people are great... just be aware they ship as "future garden" http://www.futuregarden.com/products/ultrapeat.html

the 6pk is all you need, 10 bux. this stuff goes a long way.

Weird, the specs for coco-coir say "Protects against bacterial and fungal infestations".  Yet shrooms grow great on it?  Hey, that company is right around the corner from me!  Did you mix anything else with the coco-coir?

Frank, you still get full colonization? I tryed not shaking them after inoc, and found it was difficult to get it to colonize corectly. I only shake once about 4 days into colonization.

forget ordering coco coir, just go to your local pet shop and pick up some "forest bed" reptile bedding, all coir!

pleezr - are you buying this stuff at a larger chain? Can you describe the package? I'd like to try coir (even though I'm having pretty good luck with Jiffy) - does it support the shrooms better than 50/50 or 50/50+? I'm having a really bad time with monster shrooms tumbling into their own casing.

I don't really know anyone who grows mushrooms. I just come here for fun.

Yep, I get full colonization 98% of the time. When jars stop short of full, I turn them upside down, and it seems to get the mycelium to fill the uncolonized areas in about a week or so.

Thanks for the information, Henry. I don't think I want a package labeled future garden coming to the house, so if anybody else finds this stuff at a store, do us all a favor and post the information. Thanks in advance.

You should be able to get it at any Pet Supply store. I found some at Petco. Petland discounts, etc all probably have it. It's near the reptiles, and like Pleezr said, it's "jungle bedding" for reptiles. The name may not be the same, but the package always looks the same. It looks like a "brick" with cut-off corners, as seen in the picture here:
http://www.futuregarden.com/shop/10-1004.html?id=aviEKfgQ

Instead of saying "Ultrapeat" on the piece of paper that's inside the package, it will say something about reptile bedding. Can't miss it. Here's a link that shows a pic w/o a wrapper. It's Petco:

http://www.petco.com/product_info.asp?sku=4385481270

That's not the one I saw at the store, but you shouldn't have any trouble finding it. Good luck!

Thanks for the info Targa! I'm going to check the local pet store tomorrow morning. I'll keep you all posted on my adventures in coco coir.
