question on blueing mushrooms....

alright, my friend was under the impression that all blueing mushrooms (that grow directly on cow dung for that matter) in florida were safe. he ate one along with a few cubes and got terribly sick. now, i know he could of just had a bad trip; his heart beat was beating faster than a nurse could count, tounge black, terrible headache, the doc said he was poisoned but he doesn't know of what. i was wondering if there was a list somewhere of all the mushrooms that give of "blueing" characteristics that are native to florida. maybe i could identify the one he ate with a possibly poisonus one. i myself too, was under they impression that blueing shrooms in florida were ok to eat...even if they weren't active.

i've already got three; i don't really feel it's nice to criticize; i'm asking a question, not opening myself up for insults. i've been reading information on magic mushrooms for three years now, with much thanks to this site, but this is the first time i've been talked down to without the slightest thought to answer the question. thanks.

he was fine; he picked them and he was the one that decided to eat them. i stick with cubes, cause i know the characteristics. i am really interested if there are any mushrooms that contain muscarine and bruise blue. the ones he picked bruised vividly in less than five seconds; the most prolific i've seen. he was complaining of sweating and stomach cramps as well as the want to vomit...so i suspect this chemical is the culprit.

yeah, actually. they had the same colors on the cap anyway, but they had no veil. they were smaller than cubes too, with a thinner stem with a black sporeprint and dark gills. i could take a picture of the one i have now..but it's drying, and i doubt it would help any. after we noticed them blueing, we tossed them in a different bag; when we brought them back out after the hunt, all of them turned completely blue and eventually blackish-blue.

What you are describing sounds like Copelandia cyanescens... although, that should not cause poisoning. Some people are sensitive to certain mushrooms, and can get poisoned by a species, that another person may have no negative response to.

Im almost positive (but dont quote me on it)that there are no blue brusing, dung loving, poisonous mushrooms. Around the gulf coast anyway. In fact the only other poisonous mushroom that bruises blue in your area would be a type of bolete which definitly doesnt grow in cow poo. So your friend just probably had a bad trip.

His mushrooms sound like Panaeolus antillarum. not Copelandia cyanecens.

I was under the impression that Panaeolus antillarum did not bruise blue....these bruised blue vividly. So, I suppose it's safe to say there are no dung-loving muscarine-containing mushrooms? He was having the effects similar to injesting muscarine. I asked this mainly for him..because I was seriously doubtful it was the mushrooms that caused him to feel that way. I thought he was having a bad trip aswell.
p.s. MJ, I cited from your website for my research paper on Cubes in my English 1 class in college. Thanks for helping me get an A.

MJ, my objections are the same as those above. I would have gone with Pan. antillarum, however he seemed insistent on the cluing, which rules this species out. The physical description of Copelandia cyanescens are virtually the same as that of Panaeolus antillarum, except copes specify vivid bluing.

I misread yoor post as your friend had eaten a mushroom and missed the fact about the bluing comment.
mj
No Paneolus antillarum does not stain blue , but it also would not make one sick.
A lot of times people get hiogh and think they are sick when they are really too high. They start to believe they are sick and then feed on that thought until they act sick.
Good shrooms do not make people sick and psilocine/psilocybine in itself will not make one sick. Onlty the thougtht that one is sick appllies to those who think they are sick.

My guess would be that he had copelandia cyanescens but they were rotten, or had some sort of mold. Did he experience any psychedelic effects? How much did he eat?

I have made myself physically ill from eating too large a dose of mushrooms too often (dosing several times a week). I imagine he was dosing fairly regularly and then ate a sizable quantity of Copelandia cyanescens, which are considerable stronger than the Psilocybe cubensis he is used to eating. That could definitely make somebody sick.

Hey Evan, that is a good point! Hadn't considered that...
Dan, I and my friends expect to become nauseas from consuming P. cubensis... So what you say makes sense. Nausea coupled with a bad trip could lead to an ER visit... yeah, not unlikely.
