Can I add rubbing alcohol to my perlite?

I've seen people mentioning to add a dash of peroxide, but all I have is rubbing alcohol. Would it be ok? I'm planning on running my perlite under water sitting in a strainer for about 5 minutes, I'll run some rubbing alcohol right over top, just didn't know if it was ok.

You could.
BUT, the results would be BAD.

Think it'd be better to just not worry about it? The perlite's still in the bag unopened, and from what I've heard it has no nutrition for contams to grow on.

your cakes shouldnt touch the perlite anyways so it doesnt matter really, especially if its new and out of the bag

You don't need alcohol, peroxide, heat treatment, bleach or anything else on the perlite. Just rinse, then drain well. Leave no standing water. There is nothing sterile about a fruiting chamber, nor does there need to be. All you need to be is clean, and give lots of air exchange. Good luck. RR

Yeah, they're gonna be on lids. I'll probably just pick up some h2o2 since walgreens is 1 mile away. I don't even know what it is though. lol

Thanks RR. I feel stupid now that I did a google search and realized h2o2 is just peroxide. :|
I'll have pics of my first birthed cake in a few minutes

There's no need to put alcohol nor h2o2 with your perlite. What I usually do is pour the perlite directly out from bag in a terrarium or spawn bag. Then I would spray tap water on top, be careful not to saturate it, and then place cakes directly on top. Never had any contamination problems at all.

Please don't recommend anyone to put cakes or other substrates directly on the perlite. That is a major mistake that leads to waterlogged cakes and poor harvests. RR

no, i wasn't trying to recommend for that person to directly put anything on perlite or vermiculite but i was just telling that person that "i" didn't have any problems doing it. here is the results from the past:

NO ALCOHOL! I always reuse my perlite and sterilize it with an overnight water/bleach dunk and I'm using the same perlite I've used years ago. I definitely recommend bleach dunking if reusing perlite as it will get quite rank over time if not "cleaned". I've had my share of experiences with several pathogens and keeping things clean is not a lesson in redundancy.
