Oak log shiitake
    #5954902 - 08/11/06 08:08 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Just thought I would post a pic of my first oak log fruits. These were FP sawdust spawn used in water oak. This pic was from last fall and they have fruited about 3 times since then. It only took 4 months for this first fruiting. I was pleasantly surprised as 15 logs have produced far more than I can consume and ended up drying dozens of em and giving alot of them away.

Were those freshly cut logs? Did you soak them first? How did you get the sawdust into the log? Details please...lol.

Very nice grow.

These logs were cut in the winter and sat about 3 weeks before being inoculated. I used sawdust shiitake spawn from FP without any commercial equipment. I drilled the holes and then took a cheap plastic food funnel, placed it over the hole, put some spawn in the bottom of the funnel, and then mashed it into the holes with a small rod. I then smeared some of the soft sealing wax over the holes.
I made sure the logs were kept in the shade and not too dry. It was amazing how fast the logs were colonized sufficient for this full flush. They flushed a couple of days after I did a thorough soaking (about 4 months after inoculation). I really think the sawdust spawn accounted for a more vigorous growth than dowel spawn would have. Maybe there is also something about the water oak that shiitakes love!
