For some reason I don't think I would want to get a diamond ring for a girl. Not just because they're expensive but because it's unoriginal. It would be more interesting to choose a precious stone together and get rings, maybe a couple other pieces of jewelry with the matching stone because since it's probably cheaper you could get more than a ring.
I really just don't like diamonds at all, the only thing that makes them so great IMO is their price. I need a rock with more color and style!

The funniest part of this thread is that it proves that there are practically no women on the Shroomery.

Apparently only me and one other woman would prefer an actual diamond. Then again, I don't believe that marriage is really that important or necessary, so this isn't a situation I would find myself in...however if I were to want to get married, I would prefer an actual diamond. I'd rather have a tiny real diamond than some honkin' cubic zirconia.

Actually, diamonds are evil. Fuck diamonds. Buy her a cubic zirconia and keep your fingers crossed.

I dunno i just don't see the point in spending so much money on something like that. I mean i'd rather spend the money he would spend on a real diamond into the wedding and make it one bangin party. Then again i don't really give a shit about jewelry at all.

Cubic is pure cheapskate. Get a solid band or something if you have ethical issues with diamonds. Also, if your going to marry a girl and be with her for the rest of your LIFE, then what the fuck is few thousand dollars? a very minor investment.

well that's the thing i don't think the money really says anything. the amount of money you spend on me means NOTHING about how much you like me unless you're broke as fuck and buy me things beucase you wnat to make me happy... then the action speaks volumes.. but.. i dunno.. i agree with what you're saying? but i dunno there are other things money would be better spent on.

I agree it's not about the money, but the majority of women like shiney things, and shiney things cost money. But of course actions speak louder and thats why I will hold off on marriage for as long as possible, I don't need to prove anything with a ring.

I think I'd actually prefer something other than either a diamond or CZ. I'm not a gaudy rock type of girl... A $20 ring from Walmart would be okay by me. As long as loving thought was involved.

I feel what you put in is what you get out of it. If you work hard for that real dimond it shows that you will work hard for your family. Proves that you can work it.

working hard to get something so trivial as a real diamond doesn't prove anything.. it proves that you will work really hard for something pretty pointless and dumb.. like a diamond. saving that money and putting it in to a college fund will prove MORE to me that you will care for the family we create rather than a diamond ring.

I agree. But if you can show that you can work hard for a ring, a couple grand isn't a lot. it will show that you can also pay for that college fund.
I would rather have a gold band without a stone imo.
But see i am into gems. I already got a grands wurth of presious stones. Some people like them and some people dont.

10 reasons why you should never give or accept a diamond ring.
1. You've Been Psychologically Conditioned To Want a Diamond The diamond engagement ring is a 63-year-old invention of N.W.Ayer advertising agency. The De Beers diamond cartel contracted N.W.Ayer to create a demand for what are, essentially, useless hunks of rock.
2. Diamonds are Priced Well Above Their Value The De Beers cartel has systematically held diamond prices at levels far greater than their abundance would generate under anything even remotely resembling perfect competition. All diamonds not already under its control are bought by the cartel, and then the De Beers cartel carefully managed world diamond supply in order to keep prices steadily high.
3. Diamonds Have No Resale or Investment Value Any diamond that you buy or receive will indeed be yours forever: De Beers’ advertising deliberately brain-washed women not to sell; the steady price is a tool to prevent speculation in diamonds; and no dealer will buy a diamond from you. You can only sell it at a diamond purchasing center or a pawn shop where you will receive a tiny fraction of its original "value."
4. Diamond Miners are Disproportionately Exposed to HIV/AIDS Many diamond mining camps enforce all-male, no-family rules. Men contract HIV/AIDS from camp sex-workers, while women married to miners have no access to employment, no income outside of their husbands and no bargaining power for negotiating safe sex, and thus are at extremely high risk of contracting HIV.
5. Open-Pit Diamond Mines Pose Environmental Threats Diamond mines are open pits where salts, heavy minerals, organisms, oil, and chemicals from mining equipment freely leach into ground-water, endangering people in nearby mining camps and villages, as well as downstream plants and animals.
6. Diamond Mine-Owners Violate Indigenous People's Rights Diamond mines in Australia, Canada, India and many countries in Africa are situated on lands traditionally associated with indigenous peoples. Many of these communities have been displaced, while others remain, often at great cost to their health, livelihoods and traditional cultures.
7. Slave Laborers Cut and Polish Diamonds More than one-half of the world's diamonds are processed in India where many of the cutters and polishers are bonded child laborers. Bonded children work to pay off the debts of their relatives, often unsuccessfully. When they reach adulthood their debt is passed on to their younger siblings or to their own children.
8. Conflict Diamonds Fund Civil Wars in Africa There is no reliable way to insure that your diamond was not mined or stolen by government or rebel military forces in order to finance civil conflict. Conflict diamonds are traded either for guns or for cash to pay and feed soldiers.
9. Diamond Wars are Fought Using Child Warriors Many diamond producing governments and rebel forces use children as soldiers, laborers in military camps, and sex slaves. Child soldiers are given drugs to overcome their fear and reluctance to participate in atrocities.
10. Small Arms Trade is Intimately Related to Diamond Smuggling Illicit diamonds inflame the clandestine trade of small arms. There are 500 million small arms in the world today which are used to kill 500,000 people annually, the vast majority of whom are non-combatants.

Hey no doubt, gems and stones are great, they are beautiful.. i'm not saying they aren't.. i'm just saying that the degree of seriousness women in particular take the whole engagement ring business is ridiculous.
