Adding soy protein isolate to substrate (?)
    #592001 - 03/28/02 03:07 PM (22 years, 24 days ago)

I have some Soy protein stuff lying around (i'm a vegetarian), and i'm wondering if adding like a 1/4 cup or something to my regular PF substrate would increase crop and/or alkaloid content...

anyone?

p.s. sorry about the cross-post; regular cultivation forum is useless, and my post got swamped quick.

The only way to find out is experiment with it and if any good share your results.

soy protein is widely used in mushroom industry as supplement...but it won't work in pf jars...you need to add the proteins to a bulk substrate when spawning..

Not really sure, but if it's like corn gluten then you will want to heat it. Read a patent recently that said that corn gluten which wasn't cooked sucked as an additive. Something about denaturing it or something. If you are adding to jars, I gues it will get heated enough during sterilization. If you are using it for bulks, try cooking it first.

And I don't know why it wouldn't work in pf jars.

PM me with any cultivation questions.

I just looked at my profile and realized I had a website at one point in time on geocities, it's not there anymore and I have no idea what I had on it. Anybody remember my website from several years aga? PM if so please.

I've tried adding nutrients. LOL. Best to keep it simple & straight forward.

But, since your into veggies & grains, popped popcorn added to compost works great. Grin, w/hot air popper, you can really pop up a huge garbage bag full in no time at all & it's cheap. It also holds water -- well.

Ever use Lucerne meal? I am about to test that out in a quasi/compost.

Meaning -- chopped straw, manure, Lucerne meal, popcorn mix. Lightly composted, then sterilized. A small amount of pasturized only straw is going to be added after cooling to reintroduce the good things sterilization takes away from a substrate.

What's to tell. It's a test of quasi/compost. Just sterlized. Then a small amount of pasturized straw is introduduced into the sterilized compost, then colonized grain added 20% grain to 80% compost, then after it is all colonized, it will be cased.

BlueHoney had it in one of her compost write ups. Hers just lacked the popcorn & pasturized straw was not introduced. Simple as that. I'm working on it now. If you like I will EM you the results of my little test.

Off topic, I have tried 15 times to post a logo picture where the X is in my posts. Is there some secret to it. I upload the picture - C&P the data & always get an X?

you must sterilize the supplement before adding it to the bulk substrate...btw i'm talking about stuff like spawnmate wich is soy protein based...

hmm, so I'm guessing that plain old soya mince from the health food shop will not do the job?
Sounded too good to be true.....

another good supplement is rape seed.
There's a patent about it, they dry in the oven the seeds to eliminate germination, then is added when spawning
mmm quite sure that there's no need to sterilize it.
