Not edible, yet not poisonous, or active, lol. Just surprised me.Why, Well, I had a jar of WBS, Z-strain, that had stalled colonization. So I just mixed it in some compost, and let it be. That was at least 4 months ago. This was buried right next to my front steps of my house.
Today, I was startled to see these At first I thought they were my Z-strain, but upon closer inspection, I THINK they are Lepiota Rubrotincta. Not edible, nor poisonous, but a pretty large wild mushroom nonetheless. I think they are AWESOME. Just was something nice to see in the morning. Pluckers came outta nowhere, lol. The Biggest cap was around 5in wide,7in tall. Just a pretty specimen.
Location, Ky. Been raining for the past 4 days, with no direct sun. I guess the best thing was this is my first identification of a local specimen. Anyway, sorry for wasting your time,lol...

Very cool. And this should be informative to people who throw some substrate away and assume that anything that grows there is from their grow. As you have shown, that may not be the case. Man you must have been super-excited when you saw those from a distance though. Thanks for showing us.

Well, it looks like the picture is from rogersmushrooms.com ... are you sure that what you have matches it totally.. and is there any way you can get your own pictures? Just saying because a species like that can be tricky to identify due to lots of possible look-a-likes.
Next time please mention it if you use a picture taken from online, it can be confusing and make us think that you took the pic. Unless you are affiliated with that site, in that case sorry

No. My digital camera is a piece of crap, BUT I will try to borrow a friends. The grow was HEAVILY infested with maggots, and the larger ones were very mutilated.I DID however save one of the smaller specimens in a container, as I really dont want Fungus knats in my house, as you could imagine.
Im NOT affiliated with ANYONE,lol. Its just as a newbie hunter, its hard to find a book or website about wild mushrooms in my state. That was the first site I could find that didnt cover just one state, but the whole country. Ill try to post later with a pic of my own.BTW, is that website a "bad" or "misinforming" one?

Roger Phillips (the guy behind rogersmushrooms.com) is the author of 'Mushrooms & other fungi of Great Britain & Europe.' It's classed as the most informative book on the subject in the UK.

My three favourite sites are:
http://mykoweb.com/CAF/skey.html Although it specifies for California, it is still a useful tool, as it covers many common species which are native to most of the US.
www.mushroomexpert.com Michael Kuo is a character, I enjoy his descriptions. Very good site.
www.rogersmushrooms.com Another awesome web site, that you are already aware of. Sometimes when i type the URL in it sends me to a "page not found" browser, I don't know why, as the spelling is accurrate. This can be avoided by going to google and searching "rogers mushrooms" then clicking the link that comes up.

Sorry, but these pics are 2 days after harvesting. The stem was white when I picked it, and the cap was lighter as well. Same as the gills, which were also pure white.

That's odd...it really is a great book....I got a couple copies for 13 dollars a while back...one stays at home, one goes with me in the field. I think you will really like the book, regardless of the comments....the pictures in it are color and excellent.
Your pic above is a lepiota, but I couldn't tell you exactly what kind from those pics. The red bruising gives me ideas, but nothing I could be 100% on.

Like Reddening Lepiota (Lepiota americana)? After seeing the reddening of the decaying specimen, thats what I think it is now.

Lepiota or similar genus for sure. Lepiota contains a few deadly mushrooms. Toss what you found, too risky of a genus to be messing with.
