Can drying help?
    #5953051 - 08/11/06 04:39 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hello everyone,

I was wondering if, I had a contamed cake, and I put it outside(buried it) and it produced mushrooms...Could I pick the fruits and dry them to get rid of contams/bacterea? Then the bact. or contams. wouldnt have anything to live on, so they'd die.

Any help?

If it fruits, those mushrooms still wouldn't be safe to eat. I wouldn't risk it. Cakes are super cheap to make though, as I'm sure you know. Just make more.

That sucks becuase that was the last of my syringes and I cant really get anymore for a while.. :frown: O well. So even if I pick the fruits for a while just so that it grows out new mushies, like next year could I eat them? (after this winter)

Hmmm, getting fruits immediately after a bunked grow seems unusual. I might leave them for the bugs. after a couple months, if the mycellium lives and it begins fruiting, it is likely that the contamination has died, and I would feel more safe eating those.

If you get fruits right after planting, and are worried about getting more spores, i would recommend reding up about cloning mushrooms, and trying that. It might contam as the original fruits grew from an affected substrate, but if you're willing to go through the effort, then give it a go.

One more thing, planting contaminated substrates may not fruit. Ever. So don't get your hopes up.

Oh, by the way, what contamination are we talking here?

Oh, by the way, what kind of contams are we looking at?

Cinnamon Brown Mold – Chromelosporium fulva (Peziza ostrachoderma)

The color of this mold ranges from yellow gold to golden brown to cinnamon brown. It grows rapidly in circular patches. It is very common in soil, and flourishes on damp wood. Areas in compost overheated during spawn run may be colonized. Improperly conditioned compost will also support growth, but it is most commonly known as a recolonizer of overly pasteurized casing, possibly living on dead microorganisms. It often occurs on sterilized soil. Sexual fruiting bodies may appear several weeks after the first appearance of the mold. Spores are airborne.

But I cleared it with RR and he said IF it fruits, then it should be okay to eat. But jus for shits & giggles, I'm going to wait for the 2nd flush or so. And I will look into mushroom cloning.
