Anyone know about tap water? Off color, dangers?
    #5952887 - 08/11/06 01:44 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Well usually i will freely drink the tap water at work. It has always tasted a bit off, no big deal, it has been clear at least.

Now today, I finish some coffee, clean the cup out and grab a glass of water. This is when i noticed it tasted off a bit. Allot more 'earthy'.

So i take an empty Gatorade bottle and fill it up. Low and behold the water has a light greenish brown tint!!

It smells like algae sort of. Like, ever been to a river or stream, that smell the rocks and water have. With undertones of a swimming pool.

Fuck. I've been drinking this all night. What are the chances i could be hurting myself?

I just googled water quality, and there are some really nasty things that can be in water.

I don't know if it has anything to do with it, but last week there were some pretty bad floods. I would think if there were any problems they would have a news advisory or something.

This is an industrial area, but i assume we get the same water the folks a few blocks away get in the residential area.

 hope i dont catch e.coli

*sigh*  Dranken is NOT a word.

And yeah, I really doubt it could hurt you too badly but do inform the janitor because that is disgusting.

I stay away from tap water as a rule, unless I'm boiling it for pasta etc.  Brita makes a water bottle with a filter, maybe think of getting one of those?

Report it to your boss, and insist that they report this to the town. Its not possible for the city to know something is wrong unless people report it. It is very serious when water contamination occurs, and you have to be careful. Watergrids are messy mixxy things, and everything from untreated sewage to stagnant pond water (from which you can contract bacterial menegitis) mix into the water supply. In my home town, we often had floods, and were always being issued warnings to boil our water. The rest of the year, the water was top rated for purity.

Be careful, report it, and try bringing 2L bottles from home for the time being. I wouldn't worry too much about the water you have drank so far.. just be cautious.

Yep, city is getting a call whenever they get there. No 24 hour line for anything of this nature, or I would have been all over that already.

It smells like fucking pond water. Yuck. Seems to be worse now. The toilet has a film of sediment in the bottom of it even.

I did manage to scrape up 1.50$ in change, so i went to the store and got a jug of water to make coffee with. Cant wait till the damn banks open

Gotta have the coffee  :goodmorning:

sounds like your water supply " lake, reservoir" is turning over,
a natural thing to happen, algae is coming to the top.

The only lake around, is lake erie. And right now, I dont think your even supposed to swim in it due to bacteria levels :/

im in the arctics and the biggest town has 40000 people heh so there is not much polution here. not far from here someone is selling their water around the world including hollywood stars for a high price lol , madonna imports her drinking water from here among others. our water has been measured to be as clean as it can get   i always get a nasty suprise when im in cities like copenhagen, amsterdam, paris and so on, out of old habits i can take a glass of tap water and after one sip i realize your not even supposed to brush your teeth with this water.

LOL!  Well, at least you know you don't work for an asshole.  Or maybe you do.

Like I said, Brita filter all the way once the problem gets fixed.  If it's getting worse and smells like pond water, yeah don't touch it.  You poor guy! :hypnotoad:

Wonder what would be cheaper.

Getting a Britta or similar filter and replacing filters every so often

or

Getting a water tank and buying big jugs of water every so often.

Hmmm....

Jugs of water, and refill them at a clean source.

Brita. If you buy the water cooler, you also have to buy a "water subscription."

You have to purchase x amounts of jugs a month, as opposed to a water bill and a new filter every few months.

That seems like a no brainer to me.

Seems obvious that a brita will not remove bacteria from water. It will make it taste better, but it does nothing to sterilze the water. :\
