Cutting the top off will do it, but I bet thats not the answer you were looking for, eh? Plus, you'd likely be pissed if only one new branch formed.
It can begin pupping from the bottom when it's big/healthy enough and has a nice root system.

Bought a cutting from BBB and rooted it. It had a flat cut on one side and a diagonal cut on the other. The flat side was callused better so it went into the dirt.
I was thinking about shaping the top (as I've seen on some columnar cacti) to look more natural instead of a 45 degree angle. Which got me to thinking branches might sprout from it if I did. I kinda want some naturally round tops.

the cactus would grow more effetively if planted rightside-up.
the way to tell, the spines should point more downward, and there may be a faint v-notch above them

There are hormones that you can buy and make a paste from that you apply to the areolas that will encourage branching from that site. Do some research into BAP (N-6-benzyladinine).

If it was cut on top and bottom, I would expect 2-3 pups to come off of it before the end of the season.

yes, but there is no benefit to it. You will still get 2-3 pups from a good rooted mid cut.

Awesome! My spines are pointing downward. I can't detect any v-notch, though.

I had a couple of San Pedros that I uprooted in order to move them, which ended up laying on my picknick table for a few weeks. They started to send out roots from the side facing down and growing pups from the skyward side. After planting them the pups kept on growing into arms.
I'll try to remember to take pictures tomorrow.

lying a mid cut on its side will get the same number of pups as if you stood it up, they would still tend to form at what WOULD be the top areoles tho. when it is well rooted and producing vegitative growth, youll always have an awkward little log poking sideways out of the bottom. it would take years for successive base-pupping to obscure the log.
a vertical cutting becomes more natural faster. 2-3 pups out of the top and it just looks like a branching cactus.
now laying a TIP cut might make for a more even sprout. when san pedros grow horizontal it tends to pup skyward from the trunk. while the tip slowly arks skyward.
i found a pic of this occurance online. hope i get away with a hotlink
