ziploc big bags

alright, my cat took some ziploc big bags (clickity ) and cut a hole in each of them and taped tyvek over the holes. then he steam pasteurized poo/straw, and loaded the bags up with that and a jar each of WBS. it's been about a week, and the bags look well; the heaviest one is not doing so well, but the lighter two are about halfway there. i should say the wbs ended up mostly on the bottom of the bag when he compressed it, so it's taking a little long than expected. either way, he is wondering the best way to fruit these. they fit snugly into the bottom of a 35-gallon rubbermaid, which also helps to keep them compressed; but since he doesn't have high hopes for the heavy one (no contams yet, but is probably gonna take too long), he's wondering if he should try to cram the other two into a smaller container. he imagines breaking them apart to make them fit would be a bad idea, and wonders why he tried this instead of just spawning in the bin to begin with. the cat was curious, but didn't think through all the possibilities.

wow I didn't even realize that you could PC those bags....
I don't see why he doesn't just shake up the big bag? I mean if he thinks hope is lost then the worse thing that could happen is that it takes a little longer, but since it is already taking a long time i think it is worth a try.
Fruiting wise i mean i have had poo spawn bags that i crumbled up into smaller tray's and cased so that isn't a bad idea either....
just give some recovery incubation time

heh, he didn't PC the bag. just took it right out the box. actually, had to open to make the hole for gas exchange, taped the tyvek on, sprayed lysol all up in it. before he filled it with the pasteurized straw/dung a few days later, he sprayed a little lysol in, let that dry in front of the HEPA, then gave it good dose of HEPA fresh air. (everything was done in a room with a HEPA filter rated for a room twice it's size running full on.)
he might try to break up the big one...where it's colonized it is pretty darn solid though, it was compacted well once loaded, and he doesn't wanna accidentally pop the bag open in the process. (surprising how tyvek let's the gas in and out, but not a bit of actual air out.) he's just read that there is a time frame for straw to colonize to beat out the contams. he had tried a monotub before, had a hard time achieving full colonization; this tek looks promising, and he didn't even have to pressure cook it, although he doubts he'd have acceptable results all the time with it. not really sure what makes the difference, or how he's gotten lucky enough to avoid the trich, etc. so far without PCing.

You should never compact your sub, that is probally one of your problems.
You want it to be as fluffy as possible to alow everything to spread

he had read moe's straw tek which says to push down about 10 inches of straw to about four inches, and tuck in the straw so to speak; so he figured it could be pressed to about that same ratio. the straw/dung/WBS only takes up about 30% total bag volume in the end, and most of the air was pushed out before closing it up, although just enough is still in there to make it difficult to get at the colonized chunk without popping the bag open again. might be able to go ahead and let the rest out, then zip it back up with no worries, he supposes. either way, it is not so tightly compressed that it will not colonize, as the other two bags show...it's only as tight as non-shredded damp straw will get. if there is a next time, he will try to keep the WBS from accumulating at the bottom of the bag before it starts colonizing the straw, like a smart kitty.

Those bags seem indestructable. I gotta get me some! So how is your project going?
