Long term specimen storage

Hey all! I've been wondering, first off, is it possible to store fruitbody specimens for long periods of time? The only long term storage methods I know of are those used for animal specimens (alcohol, fermaldehyde, etc). Are there similar chemicals that can be used to store a fruitbody in perfect condition?
I know that freeze drying can work, but I cannot afford a freezedryer.
Also, would having a single specimen in a display case along with other biological specimens be illegal? I understand that technically yes, but if its been prepared in such a way as to be preserved for a long period of time, I can only guess that the psilocybin would eventually degrade to being pretty much nonexistant.

How about encasing a fresh fruit-body with some sort of plasticating resin?

you think it would still rot if you did the dry ice thing in a small container so all the oxygen was displaced by co2

I would think some variation of the recipe below might work.
Makes approximately 2 pints.
2 pounds mushrooms
2 T pickling salt
1/2 C water
3 C cider vinegar
1/4 C extra virgin olive oil
2 cloves garlic, chopped
4 bay leaves
1 tsp peppercorns
1 tsp dill seed
4 dried red peppers
Wash and trim the mushrooms, and place them in a saucepan with enough water to cover; add the salt and bring to a boil. Simmer for 5 minutes. Rinse them several times and set aside to drain. In the same saucepan, combine water, vinegar, and oil; bring this to a boil, add the mushrooms, and simmer for 5 minutes more. Remove the mushrooms from the brine using a slotted spoon, and packed them into hot, sterilized jars. Place ½ tsp chopped garlic, 1 bay leaf, 1 red pepper, 1/4 tsp peppercorns, and 1/4 tsp dill seed in each jar. Pour enough brine over the mixture to cover the mushrooms. Seal according to manufacturer’s instructions. Process in a Boiling Water Bath for 10 minutes. Wait at least 2 weeks before opening, so the flavors can blend.

I think I remember reading something about storing them in honey.

honey will in fact work fantastically
might not be the most transparent thing if you're trying to make a little display case, but they will keep longer than you're alive in a sealed container submerged in honey.
i like the display case idea, would make an interesting conversation piece
but by the very nature of the preservation you're going for, i say its likely the psilosin/psilocybin won't just go away... they don't just "degrade" over time automatically... psilocybin is dephosphorylated to psilosin, psilosin is oxidized. no oxygen, no oxidation. not to say that you perfectly preserve it either, over time im sure those reactions will still occur on a small scale, but even after many years there should still be more than enough actives to be detected... don't go proudly showing your display case at a policeman's ball and i think you're gonna be just fine. i dont think even the biggest asshole of a law enforcer will give you shit for having a single specimen stored in a manner not fit for consumption.

oh and P.S., what tippin suggests will work too. but you only need the brine solution (salt water) and vinegar to preserve it. pickiling works with a 10% salt/water solution... so you can scale it down. the other ingredients are for flavoring, which isn't a concern if you're making a display.
when you place the mushrooms in the brine solution though i'm almost garunteeing they're going to very rapidly blue. the salt water will rupture the cells. this will accomplish your goal of getting rid of some of the actives, but might not make such a pretty specimen to view.

Just thought I'd throw in this idea:

- That's a vacuum container. You can pump the air out of it, thereby eliminating (or drastically reducing) the bacteria and ambient moisture that can cause problems in the long run. As you can see, there are also desiccant packs in there.
A vacuum container wouldn't really help to preserve a specimen indefinitely, but it certainly slows down the rate of degradation.

Stamets says to dry it and throw it in the frige is BEST
The longer you wait, the more potency is lost
I put them in the frige, never in there for too long
BTW Stamets also says its not good to mix it into a liquid concoction, like a shake, it has the shortest shelf life, I would quote but I am not home
