Fairly experenced grower here / WBS + BRF
    #5950832 - 08/10/06 02:51 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Ok so I have done some trays with WBS and have concluded that WBS works for its speed but not for its flushes.

So my Idea is to mix a little BRF into my jars of WBS before they get pressure cooked in order to increase the nutrents in the substrate.

Im sure this has been suggested before, just wanted to see what everyone thinks. Is this a bad idea? should I cut the crap and get some horse shit?

the only really good use for WBS is spawn for mixing in with bulk substrates. for example poo, straw, coco coir, compost etc

i would recommend you don't fruit the WBS, instead add it to a bulk substrate which has lots of nutrients in it.

the problem with wbs and yields isn't nutrition, its moisture.  adding brown rice flour won't help you there.

a few options:

when you lay your colonized wbs out in a tray to fruit, mix in some damp verm, allow to recover and colonize the verm for a few days, then case.

second option, is cutting the crap like you say, and spawn it to something else.  poo is good.  coir works, compost works, straw works... what all those things have in common, aside from the nutrition they provide, is a good texture, and moisture holding capabilities... so when spawning you get 2 for 1: extra moisture, and extra food.  but mixing in with verm like i first suggested, takes care of the moisture at least.

i have fruited alot of just wbs trays and moisture is my only concern. keep addind damp casing as it shrinks and i have had some make it 5 flushes. moved into horse poo. it takes longer but yeilds better but was a struggle in the beginning vs just casing the wbs.

I would have to agree that WBS is best if spawned. It gives the most amount of inoculation points in your sub allowing for quicker colonization times.

Would you all really consider coir as a bulk sub? Not to get off topic but poo is way way better

I disagree that poo is way better.

I would personally certainly consider coir as a bulk substrate.
Just add a nitrogen supplement.

anyway...

I suggest you abandon your WBS and trade it in for
RYE.

your brf addition will not really improve much, as said above.

If you are determined to not use a bulk substrate,
use RYE as your grain.

That is your best bet for water retention with grains.
