having a couple problems
    #5950601 - 08/10/06 01:26 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I have a colonized jar put in a styrofoam container, with a drip guard and whatnot. My first question is: I got a few pins not but a few days ago, but they've not done anything since except shrivel a bit and the tiny caps are green. I would be so grateful of any help anyone can give.
I'm also having a problem with a contam on another batch. It is light brown, almost orangish. It is also very wet looking. I looked thru the common contam post and it seems most like a "wet spot". I can't imagine this being edible, but my second question is: is it?
Thanks in advance this site has been a lifesaver.

All contaminations are edible... but sometimes only once.

You might be lucky and get away with only food poisonng, diahrea, vomit, the works.

Can you post a photo or few of the first problem described?? The one with the green caps? It could be simply aborted pins. This is basically pins that for whatever reason, stop growing and the caps turn black/green/blue. If that is the case, they are perfectly fine to eat, and infact, quite potent, as the psilocybin content is rather concentrated at the intitial stages of growth. However, if somehow green mold was able to take over a set of pins (highly unlikely) before any of the substrate, you'd get food poisoning.

The possible wet spot, take a very quick wiff- does it smell like wet dog food, or sour/sweet, rancid, fermented??? If it smells like any of that, it is most likely wet-spot. Toss it or bury it in your back yard.
