[censored by moderator] and her 22-year-old cousin, [censored by moderator], were out for a night at the clubs, celebrating Popescu’s 23 rd birthday.
They returned to [censored by moderator]’s home at 2555 Avalon Place early on the morning of July 29. [censored by moderator]went to sleep in her own bed, Popescu, on the couch in the living room.
When someone awakened [censored by moderator], she thought it was an intruder. She reached for the gun she kept under her pillow, aimed and pulled the trigger, she told Columbus police.
The person who room was [censored by moderator]. She was shot at 3:51 a.m. on July 29, the hour and date she’d been born, family members said.
On Saturday, after a week on life-support, [censored by moderator]was removed from the machines that kept her alive. Franklin County Coroner Brad Lewis ruled that the cause of death was the bullet wound in her head.
[censored by moderator]was charged with reckless homicide and spent a night in the Franklin County jail before appearing yesterday before Municipal Court Judge Andrea C. Peeples.
Police said the shooting appeared accidental, but they were concerned that [censored by moderator]might flee. She had tickets to fly to Europe for a planned vacation.
[censored by moderator]’s attorney, Larry Levinson, noted that she hadn’t tried to run in the days after the shooting and said she is "absolutely no risk of flight" now.
Peeples set bail at $10,000. Family members put up that amount through a bail-bonding company, and the judge did not restrict [censored by moderator]from going to Europe. She was released from jail yesterday.
Neither [censored by moderator]nor her relatives would talk to a Dispatch reporter about the cousins or the shooting. One said the family still can’t believe that [censored by moderator]is dead and is too shocked to speak.
[censored by moderator], of 659 Parliament Ave., had worked at Chase Home Finance where co-workers were upset by news of her death.
If convicted, [censored by moderator], who has no criminal record, could be sentenced to up to five years in prison. -10TV (Local station)

That's weird as hell. I wonder, is there a question of whether or not this is an accident? If so, a ballistics analyst could clear that up pretty easily...
Other than that, if they deem it an accident, she might get some jail time anyways. I'm really sorry dude.

Look before you shoot.
That's pretty freaky that she died the exact time and date she was born, though.

That is really crazy...to think what started as a night of fun ended in such tragedy.

i fail to see how any judge or jury is going to charge her with homicide. That's bullshit, you have the right to defend yourself in your own home with a weapon. Not only that, why would you want to add more tragedy onto this event? The poor girl just shot and killed her own cousin, id be pretty fucked up for the rest of my life if i shot and killed one of my own cousins.
It's funny, because recently a cop just brutally shot a man in a car. The cop was being tried for homicide as well, it's damn obvious that the cop had no reason to run up to the car, shatter the driver window, and kill the driver.

It blew me away because i only read/hear about this kind of stuff happening and i shrug it off bacause it happens all the time, it really makes you slow down and pay attention when its someone you know personally.

I live in the middle of nowhere, on the outskirts of a massive forest that serves as a black bear preserve. Do you think I shouldn't have a gun for protection when camping/hiking?

no, obviously it's more practical for YOU to have one. but i don't think the average american should have the right to own one.. i don't think it should be one of the 10 bill of rights.

Indeed, I'd rather die by a bullet to the temple than 1000 knife wounds to the chest...if a guy wants to murder, the method is probably often only a minor detail

That would be ideal.
It's a shame for all involved.
Short barrelled pistols don't help, even if you just aim to wound, you're likely to miss your target at any distance over 5 feet in the dark.
