ID request - NE Ohio
    #5948385 - 08/09/06 07:05 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I found this today in my front yard. Any info would be very helpful. I'm doing a spore print now, so any info about spore color/hygrophanous qualities I'll edit in as I get it.

pics:

Habitat: found on my front lawn, growing from recently mowed grass in soil.
Gills: dark brown pores in convex shape
Cap: light brown, 3-4" diameter
Spre print color: yet to be determined
Bruising: none observed
Location: Picked in Northeast Ohio

Good description and photos.

What kind of trees are growing near where it came up?

Try cutting it in half vertically. See if any color changes occur in the flesh inside. Note that color changes can take up to an hour.

Look very closely at the stem surface (with a magnifier, if possible). Is there a net-like pattern of raised ridges on the surface? If there is, it often occurs only at the very top of the stem near the tubes. Are there a bunch of tiny colored dots? Or is it just smooth?

The cap surface looks dry. Try wetting your fingertip with a drop of water and rubbing the cap surface with it. Does it become slimy?

Happy mushrooming!

Some sort of boletus. Explore it the way ToxicMan says in order to gain some info that might help getting a proper id.
