Vivid Dream
    #5948274 - 08/09/06 06:28 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I had a dream recently that really made me question reality, and the accuracy to which I assume I'm awake.

I've been doing lucid dream exercises, one of them is checking your watch then asking yourself if you are dreaming. Behavior often carries on into dreams, and this behavior has a double fold effect. It causes you to ask yourself if you a dreaming, and also causes you to check your watch which usually throws a flag up that you are dreaming. It's a pretty old lucid dream technique. Well, I was in the middle of a dream and I checked my watch. It was an analog watch, not a digital, so the error wasn't as obvious but it was upside down. I remembered thinking "this is odd...am I dreaming?"

I walked up to a wall in my dream and punched it, to see if I felt pain. And I did feel pain, it really hurt my fist. I then concluded that there was no way I could possibly be dreaming. All my sensations were working in perfect accord with actual reality.

Well, as I stated, it ended up being a dream. It really threw me off, I'm still shaken from it.

punching walls hurts.

i ran into one at full speed once and it hurt immensely bad.....

i felt a bit silly for it. and i was lucid at the time... hoping to see what happened.

if you're going to punch a dream wall you probably need to prepare for it by assuming it's really soft, or that you are the incredible hulk and can easily smash it.

just like looking at a dream watch and it telling you the time (though not the right time!) punching a dream wall results in you punching a wall. looking at a watch results in you seeing the time.

but hey you made a good try.

the best RC I've ever learned is to plug your nostrils shut and see if you can inhale through them.

the lightswitch one is great too.

possibly the reason why it's hard to turn lights off or on in dreams is because we do not associate flipping a switch with bringing light. it is an act that is COMPLETELY conditioned and largely unconscious, you just flip a switch on and there you go... it's not like you took a lighter, lit a candle, and then you had light.

or it could be with how the brain views light. or it could be that lightswitchs only don't work because we tell people they don't work.

either way, lightswitches, playing with them..... it's a good reality check because it's really hard for your dream to move as fast as reality does, if you flick one up and down real fast .... well i dunno... has anyone ever dreamed of strobe lights? I think the brain would really struggle with it.

plus the third eye/pineal uses light in order to dispense melatonin and it's possible the DMT released by it is what gives us our dreams.... so it's likely that you couldn't mess with the light reception of your dreams too much.

I have the same thing happen to me. It always makes me think, how is waking reality really different than a dream. You actually really feel like you are there. Life is but a dream.

I wanted to try a light switch, but none were around. I was in the street. The watch usually works if it's digital, and even analog watched look all messed up. As soon as I felt the pain from the wall I just instantly assumed this had to be reality. I remember even feeling foolish for questioning reality as if it were a dream.

analog watches have tricked me too.

but you can always try flying! to fly i jump in the air then jump again while still jumping from the first jump.

it's not a reality check you can try in real life though if you're walking down the street, unless you aren't modest. then it would be awesome to try.

I'll try your tips and let you know how it all works out.

The fact that I take melatonin every night just adds to the dream intensity.

i have alot of lucid dreams where I cannot convince myself that I am dreaming. I was in "my bathroom" in a dream once and I knew it wasnt my bathroom. It looked completely different and i knew it was a dream but i could not convince myself. this happens alot to me. I tried pinching my arm and it hurt really bad so i figured I really was not dreaming. If you have had lucid dreams you will realize this. Another time I thought I might be in a lucid dream and I wanted to jump out the window but chickened out because I thought it might not really be a dream. Does anyone else have any similar experiences

reading something is supposed to be a pretty good method.

like read a sign, look away, and try to read it again and see if it says the same thing

Yup, I had an near identical incident. I recognized my room, yet it wasn't my room. Or I recognize my car, yet it isn't my car. I always am aware in the dream that this isn't accurate, but I some how always convince myself that it is reality anyways. Deep down I know it isn't right, but my self tells me that everything is OK and that I'm not dreaming.

As stated above, there are "glitches" in dreams, and that's what I'm trying to find. Practical glitches that I can expose to force myself into realizing that I am dreaming.
