Complete AT thru hike this year or do it all over again next year?
    #5947776 - 08/09/06 03:42 PM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Well I've got the funds and my stress fracture has heeled making it possible for me to finish my Georgia to Maine AT thru hike, I'm at Bear Mountain New York and have 700 some miles left. I could leave as early as the 14th of this month and probably be able to finish the trail with out flip-flopping. I'm thinking it would take about 2 months but if I'm wrong and attempt a NOBO I could get screwed out of finishing because Baxter State Park closes Oct. 15th and will close earlier if the weather gets bad. The only problem is I'm not the biggest fan of cold weather hiking and I'm certain to see some terrible weather in the Whites all the way to Maine. If I flip-flop I'll be hitting peak colors in new england which would make it all worth it. Although I'd see some hairy weather any way I approach it most of it would be mild and much more enjoyable than what I would of been hiking in had I not gotten injured. I'll also miss the worst of the black flies.

But I'm leaning heavily on just doing it all over again next year, I can't think of anything I'd rather do, I had the time of my life out there and I'd love to go back to Springer with my experience in March and start with the hoards. I'll spend most of my time alone out there at this time of year, the SOBO's are south and the NOBOs will be in front of me unless I flip-flop, then I'd run into a lot of people I've hiked with early this spring and summer.

I really don't know what to do at this point and I have to decide fast.

Do you know FOR A FACT that you CAN do it again next year? If you don't do what you can do right now, because you're gonna be saying "well,.... next year....." youi'll feel like a real tool when next year comes along and something-anything- keeps you off the trail.

If you can keep hiking... keep hiking. I can't really tell you which direction to continue.... fall in New England would rock, but there would be the sense of accomplishment of finishing the hike. That's up to your own heart and trail sense to figure out.

If you're are recupping from an injury -- don't press your luck! Let it heal and to it a complete man, not a hobbling bitter hiker.

happy trails, bro!

I don't have anything stopping me from doing it again next year at this moment but I can't know what will happen between now and March of next year.

I can do it now and I think that means I should, if something stops me later and I put it off now I would definitely feel like a real tool. Plus that opens up my chances for new experiences next year.

The friend I started with completed his thru and summit-ed Katahdin at 1100 am yesterday morning, I'm picking him up from the airport on the 14th.

If I go back I'm going to Maine before September 1st, I believe this is my best option since I don't know how out of shape I've gotten in 6 weeks. I believe my injury is completely healed, I was told by a doctor it would be healed up in 2-4 weeks and I haven't felt any discomfort in since mid-july.

I really doubt I'm going back out this year and there is way to many other trails, like the CDT, to bother doing it all over again. I will finish but not in one calender year.
