Setting up a new grow, Martha -- got a few questions
    #5946993 - 08/09/06 10:33 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

Hey guys, I've been searching around for a comprehensive Martha tek and have yet to succeed in finding one. I just picked up an ultrasonic humidifier from Goodwill for $10 and I was noticing that it was recommended to have it set to run a few minutes every hour, with a cool mist running. Is the cool mist necessary? Would it be doable to just use the ultrasonic and perhaps have it run a little bit more every hour?

I'm also a bit in the dark about how to control how often it runs. Where would I be able to find a good, relatively inexpensive hydrometer to control when it runs? Would something like a light timer work as well?

Also, I've noticed it's said that using an ultrasonic doesn't provide enough FAE...any suggestions on how to balance this or should I just be breaking down and buying a cool mist?

Any tips would be awesome! Thanks guys!

This is a thread that tells a great rye tec from start to finish, and in it is instructions for Martha.
It is a great simple tec that has been well proved many times. Check it out.

You really need the coolmist more than the ultrasonic. The coolmist provides FAE and some humidity. Ultrasonics are just for a super humidity boost if you chamber is too big for the cool mist.

Run a cool mist (impellar type, it has to be an impellar type to work properly... Vicks makes a good one) 24/7 connected via a hose for humidity + FAE.

Use a light timer and set your ultrasonic (also hosed) to come on for 3 minutes every 2 hours. Any longer, or attemping to use solely an ultrasonic, is doomed to have many aborts due to over-saturation in the air.

Fan your martha 3-4 times a day if you can.

Be careful with the ultrasonic, it should only come on that little bit of time or you will have way too much humidity. The coolmist provides FAE and an optimal humidity level.

Hope this this helps.  :mushroom2:

Even with the coolmist it will need to be fanned 3-4 times per day?

I will be doing this in a small one bedroom apartment away from my main living quarters (seems safest, and housing where I will be is dirt cheap) and I'm looking at setting up a martha to get something self-sufficient except for casing, harvesting, etc. I will still probably be stopping in once per day to check on my babies, but I don't have time to be fanning 3-4 times per day as a full time student and a part time worker (assuming I can find a job in that college student filled town).

With a cool mist running is it really necessary to fan or will it take care of the FAE? Would hooking up some kind of air pump via another hose work?

If you have a cool mist you don't need to fan as long as it's running most of the time. That's half the reason for getting one.

Fanning 3-4 times a day, during pinning espeically, doesnt hurt... but its not mandatory. The cool mist (on the outside being hosed in) is enough FAE for the most part.

I never fan my greenhouse. The cool mist provides LOTS of FAE which your casings will love.
