Pasteurizing Hpoo without a candy thermometer.

Hello,
I just got some dry Hpoo and I was wondering how to pasteurize it without a candy thermometer and without an oven bag. Could I just leave the Hpoo in say a quart jar with the oven set to 170 for 2 hours? Do you think that would work? Just curious. Because I'm short on cashola. Thx.

do you have a pressure cooker?
if you do have a pressure cooker...
you could...

It's very easy to use your PC to pasteurize in quart jars. Load your field capacity compost/manure into quart jars and place in the PC. Fill with COLD water 1/2 to 2/3 of the way up the jars. Place the jars in your PC. Cover and turn on the stove. Do not place the weight on your pc. Leave the vent open. Allow the water to come to a boil where you can feel steam escaping from the vent hole. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 1/2 an hour. Then repeat the process...bring it back up to a boil. Allow steam to escape for five minutes, but no longer. Shut off the stove and leave the PC alone for 2 hours. At that time, you can remove the jars and they'll be just right. I've used this tek for years, and the interior of the jars will reach 150F for an hour, but never exceed 170F.
If you do't have a pressure cooker...
go buy a Candy thermometer they are only a few dollars!~

you can pasteurize in the oven but it's not ideal. get your substrate to field capacity, fill an oven bag half full and close it with a twist tie or rubber band. put the bag in a roasting tray. put it in the oven for about 5 hours at 180 or so - with dry heat it takes a long time to get the center up to temperature, and in my experience a 180 setting will get the center up to 150+ after about 3-4 hours. but oven temperatures oscillate a lot and often aren't calibrated properly. i used to oven pasteurize my oyster substrates, now i use hot water baths or a portable electric roaster oven, much more reliable.
it's better to just get a candy or meat thermometer. they're like 5 bucks new and i've frequently found them for a buck at goodwill. this way you'll *know* and can then isolate the source of any possible contams. once you get your system down you can stop using the thermometer.

Yes, I've got a PC but it's old and it's missing the gasket to keep the air in. I should have a little extra money later this week and seeing as my subs wont be ready to case for another week everything should time out just fine. Thx for the input. I'll probably end up doing the oven-tek since I'm not sure where to get a gasket for this ancient PC. But, If I do figure out where to get the replacement part (if it's still made) I'll use RR's method you posted.

you dont really need a working gasket to pasteurize in a PC, since you're not actually pressurizing it... you're letting steam out with that method anyway so it doesn't matter if it seals well, right?

I would tend to agree.

In a pinch, a normal thermometer, you take your temperature would work in a water bath. Those are all over, borrow one if need be. Candy thermometer at Walmart is like $3, maybe $5.
Plastic bag of hydrated h/poo in a water bath is FAR better than trying to pasteurize anything in a dry oven. Which is very prone to blunders.

Thx everybody for the input. I might do the RR thing without the gasket and see if it works. Mostly, it depends on how things go this week. I've got to get my grow rack together too and that's high priority for me. Plus, I've got plenty of sub colonizing to play with Will let yall know how things turn out in a few weeks.

'Candy thermometer at Walmart is like $3, maybe $5.'
Too bad it is from Walmart though... Walmart sells Junk that breaks in about 2 months after buying, WALMART BLOWS!

I think it was an example that the thermometers can be found easily and inexpensively.
