i watched this google video... 1 hour 2 mins long on growing psy. mushrooms (cant provide link- goes against rules) and the guy put rye and water in a jar and PCed it. no extra steps. he then inoculated it, and once it was colonized, he spilled some out into 10 other PCed rye jars, sterilly, and then took those 10 and put them into 100 PCed rye jars. so if it really this easy? are all those Teks misleading with all the extra steps?

Nope. You can do it either way. Many growers prefer to soak for two reasons. One, it helps to hydrate/germinate the bacterial endospores so they can be killed in the PC. At different times of the year, and in different parts of the world, grains have more endospores. Also, the longer the rye has been stored, the more likely it is to have contaminants. The soak first helps to ensure a more complete sterilization.
The other reason for soaking is it slowly hydrates the kernels, so they soften up gradually, which cuts way down on burst kernels later.
I recommend a few rinses of the grains before soaking. If you'll fill a pot with your dry grains and water, then swirl it around, you'll see all the dust and chaff come to the surface where you can pour it off. Rinse a few times until the water pours off clear, then soak. This will help prevent clumping later.
Add your gypsum to the soak water if you do it this way. I use a tablespoon of gypsum for each ten cups of grains. RR

my experience is largely with oysters but whatever type of mushroom you're growing, grain jar preparation is largely the same. if you just add water to dry rye grains and PC you'll quite possibly end up with a soggy, sticky mess at the bottom of your jars and the top kernels not fully hydrated. in my experience it's better to hydrate the grains first by soaking or simmering or both, then PC. but some people have success with just mixing and PCing.
listen to roger of course, he gives good advice. but more importantly, use the search function and the archives and you will find plenty of detailed, step-by-step teks for grain preparation.
