Fruiting Chamber question
    #5946299 - 08/09/06 12:36 AM (17 years, 5 months ago)

I'm planning on growing my first batch of mushies within a month, and after some research have decided on the standard PF Tek followed by the 50/50+ casing tek. I've made a list of all the materials I have to buy, but when it comes to the fruiting chamber, the teks left me fuzzy on what I need. Most of them simply referred to a fruiting chamber or said to use an aquarium (i don't have an aquarium and would much rather not buy one of the costly things). Would a humidity tent like the ones available from http://www.mycofactory.com/ be satisfactory? Or could I substitute any airtight and sterile container for an aquarium, such as, excuse my nubness, a simple ice cooler? Thanks in advance, and I apologize if I overlooked the answer in the shroomery resources.

I expect an ice cooler should work fine if you use a clear lid that is somewhat sealed to protect humidity.

If you don't mind sacrificing the cooler you could even use the poly fil technique for air flow.

I can't find a link to a guide on the poly-fill. From what I've read you basically drill some holes near the top layer and put poly fill in them. Casings don't need really high humidity so it should be fine.

Thanks, I'll look up that technique.

Personally, I think most people make this all way more complicated than it needs to be. Unless you want to make bushles of them, you really don't need anything fancy. These are all the materials I use for my fruiting chamber and casings:

1 X 20g rubbermaid container (~$4)
polyfil (15x more than I need for ~$7)
6 disposable loaf pans (made of foil, ~$2 for 6) - great for casings

And that's about it. I put a layer of perilite in the bottom of the rubbermaid container with about a gallon or two of water and a cup of bleach. Put the casings on top, close the lid and wait. Works great:

And here I did a similar thing only I used a glass aquarium instead of the rubbermaid container:

And when I'm really lazy and don't have much mycellium to play with, I just case it into a 2.5g aquarium (<$10). This is kinda my favorite because it's so small, easy to hide, and practically no maintenance. It hardly ever even needs misting:

So, seriously, I think there are a lot of easy ways to do this. Sure, they may not be completely ideal. But like I said, unless you want to do this for a living or something, these simple ways work well enough (at least for me).

Yeah. Just do that, or go monotub. Materials needed: Rubbermade tub with clear lid, and polyfil. Any size will do...I have all kinds of monotubs, lol.

Looking fine Fungusman

But dude, you know, I didn't even bother trying to find a clear lid.  I just got a regular old grey one and cut a square out in the lid with a razor blade.  Then covered the square hole with plastic wrap and clear packaging tape.  The not-clear tubs are more discrete too (for those of who have to worry about that).
