One Week of the C H I L L S
    #594571 - 03/31/02 12:14 PM (22 years, 5 months ago)

I innoculated almost a full week ago (the 25th) and have since then kept my jars in a plastic coated shoe box on a top shelf in my closet. For some reason I have neglected the fact that the temperature should stay at a minimum 80F, as my jars have been in more like a range of 60-68F. No sign of mycelium yet, and as I've been looking into building an incubator it's becoming more and more apparent that i should have done so much earlier. I have heard that low temps can cause stalls and sometimes complete halts to mycelium growth, and i fear that I will not be able to purchase an aquarium heater until next Friday. I was curious as to any suggestions for a temporary 'poor man incubator'. I have done some researching myself, but it seems most cheap ones would dry my jars. I had an idea using an electric blanket and a towel, but this would most likely dry my jars... Anyway- what should i do until Friday guys? And I've already thought about robbing a bank, so think of something else

THANKS!!

If you have a light socket in that closet i d advise a 75w bulb.. thats what my friend did before she built a incubator.

your fine man... a buddy of mine left a jar of "a" in a car during a snowstorm for a week, after 3 days after rescuiing it it revived.... your jars will colonize still just get them in a warmer place afoaf doesnt ever use a incubator... just find a closet or a place near a water heater or just a place thats warm... room temp is really OK though

Thanks, I found a 65W flood light, the light socket is about 2 ft away from the shoe box w/ my jars inside. Hopefully this will help.

Fill up your bathtub with very hot water and keep the door closed. The room will stay in the 80-90 degree range with very high humdity for many hours. Refill the tub when it cools down.

Use the electric blanket dude.
I switched to that when it finally got cold here.
Works great.
