I have done a bunch of differemt catuses such as San Pedro and Peruviamn Torch but have never seen "pure" mescaline. I may be wrong but I thought it was real easy to get in the 70's so why isnt it now? Acid was also avialable but I think it became to popular so people started cracking down but why mescaline? Is it hard to get a pure form?

It's not profitable compared to other drugs. That's the bottom line.

it takes 8 years for a peyote plant to become mature enough to give any effects, so it takes a bit of a commitmant...and im pretty sure the peyote cactus is endangered

There are many cacti that contain mescaline that can be used as a source.
The sheer amount of plant matter you'd have to harvest to get a wholesale quantity of mescaline is fairly large though, and the amount of effort and resources required is much lower than it is to simply cook up some meth.

It might be fair to say that excluding the trichocereus cacti of today, mescaline had a slightly larger appearance in the 60's-70's. There scertainly was some synthetic mescaline, but probably not as widescale as it sounds. There were a few busts involving LSD, where a number of other chems would be found. MDA, DMT, Mescaline. Even today, poly-drug labs have some interesting things. But they still don't generally make it to the street. They're for an inner circle of people, or just so the chemist can have the satisfaction of having made it.
Back in the day, there was actually acid being sold as mescaline. A bit different from the days we live in now, where things are being sold as acid. But acid was all over the place at the time. And mescaline was something that sounded either more rare, or more natural for those who were afraid of man-made chemicals.
I'm curious as to how much peyote was sold though. I'm aware of many people making treks to mexico to aquire peyote and mushrooms, but curious as to how much of both made it back to the streets in major US cities.
